Since arriving in Vietnam two terrible things have happened; firstly I'm a full 8 hours older than I was in the UK and secondly I have massive kankles (that big there's a dint where my socks have been)!! However the good news is we've arrived safe and sound and we're loving this crazy city so far.
The journey went as smoothly as it possibly could. Although we were told in England the we might not be allowed entry in Vietnam as we only have a one way ticket and no onwards journey. However once we arrived I don't think the Vietnamese Visa Office could have cared less as long as we paid our $50. Other than that we ate, slept and watched enough films to pass the 16 hour journey pretty quickly.
Our first mission after getting to the airport was to get a SIM card, which turned out to be pretty simple. However finding out our number is not! After reading up on all the Taxi scams Ho Chi Minh is famous for I was pretty wary about how we would get to our hotel, however Scott being Scott decided to just jump in the nearest one. The journey was crazy, the streets can not be described in words, there are mopeds EVERYWHERE and it's hard to tell which side of the road they actually drive on, I think the basic rules are; you honk your horn, drive and hope for the best. For all I could tell the taxi man may have driven around the same block about 20 times, however we arrived at the hotel and the price seemed reasonable enough, so I'm happy.
Our first night mainly consisted of us sat on tiny plastic chairs, drinking 40p beer while watching all the crazy sights which I can't even begin to describe. We finished the night off with some Beef Pho mopped up with a crusty baguette, yummm.
So the POA for our first few days is to find the backpacking district and move from our big, double bedroom with air con into something cheaper that I'm sure will be clean, cool and comfy and will not have any cockroaches/rats/spiders/insects. We're also going to see about booking some tours and basically just go and explore the city. I'm sure we can fill any spare time we have with having a few beers, at that price it would be rude not to!
Hope everyone in the UK is good and that you aren't missing us too much, I can understand if you are though!
