The next two days were spent doing a tour along the Mekong Delta, a massive river that runs through Cambodia and then into Vietnam. I didn't listen too much to the tour guide so can't give you much more info than that. Although I did listen to the stories he told about locals chopping off tourists arms to steal their bags, made me feel really comfortable.
Unfortunately this meant another 8am start, I'm not sure we're ever going to get a lie in here! After trying to fit on to the bus like sardines I was happy to see the seat next us was free, however as luck would have it at the next stop the annoying American got on! She pretended not to recognise me (im guessing she was embarrassed after calling me smelly) and decided to spend the rest of the journey talking at me about every country she had visited. Yawn!! I discreetly slipped in my headphones and nodded along to Jimmy Eat World whilst she babbled on.
The first day of the tour we spent on a boat going about different islands along the Delta. Each one seemed to make something different and we got a whistle stop tour and a chance to try the produce. Luckily we ended up sharing the same horse and cart as a like minded Australian couple. They also believed that each of the products we tried went down better with a couple of beers. So it went some like this; coconut candy and beer, honey tea and beer, banana whiskey and beer, exotic fruit and beer, traditional singing and beer and my personal favourite; feeding the crocodiles and beer.
That evening was spent in a little town between Ho Chi Minh and the South West coast. There wasn't much going on there so it was a pretty uneventful evening.
The next day was our earliest yet with a 6am get up to go and visit the floating markets. These were pretty impressive to see, all local traders have a boat with a long pole on top, stuck to the pole is an example of everything they sell. Sellers also come and attach their boat to yours and get pulled along whilst trying to sell you a bottle if water exactly the same as the one you're already drinking.
We got back to the mainline and had to fill a couple of hours before we got our next bus and for the first time since we got here we saw rain!! It's was still boiling hot so it was pretty manageable. Me, Scott and an Irish girl named Abby went to find somewhere to have lunch, because it was raining we wet to the first place we found where we could sit inside. The owner was so happy she dragged us in and pointed at lots of unidentifiable food. We nodded our heads and sat wondering what kind of weird meat we were about to eat. Turns out there wasn't any meat, we were in a vegetarian 'restaurant'. We all ended up with a soup filled with tofu, dried tofu and nearly every mushroom you can imagine (unfortunately there were no magic ones included). For someone who still doesn't have adult taste buds and doesn't like veg I ate a lot of it! I tried to get Scott to congratulate me but he wasn't as impressed with mushroom eating skills as I was.
The rest of the day was spent on a bus travelling towards a town on the coast called Rach Gia. From here we had a ferry booked the next morning to Phu Quoc, an island about two hours off the coast. The town was even quieter than the night before as we spent most of the evening looking for beer, however I don't think many tourists come here and everyone wanted say hello.
From here we plan to spend sometime of Phu Quoc getting our Scuba Diving qualifications, so sun, sand, sea and scuba it shall be.
