Oh Canada
Adelaide to Invermere
A wise man once told me (thanks Ian D), "Pay the extra fee for an exit row seat…it is worth it" YES, Amen to that, is all I have to say. Leg room and even a sneaky lie on the floor for a short while, along with great friendly service on Air Canada made travelling cattle class, which can never be described as desirable, at least bearable!!
Admittedly, I was not as excited as usual about leaving on an overseas trip, but we managed to fit in farewells to most of the family before midnight on Tuesday night, pack and semi prepare ourselves in enough time to get 4 hours sleep!!
The connections in Sydney and Vancouver were frantic rushes, the movie choices ok, and possibly 1 ½ hours sleep total, but eventually we arrived in Calgary.. along with our luggage YAY. Of course the prebooked/prepaid rental car was not smooth and ended up costing us double what we planned- we should have listened to Beth!!! Anyway, we ended up with a nice car and managed to get to Banff without falling asleep at the wheel - no mean feat, and found our lovely accommodation. Got a second wind, enough to take in the ambience of this beautiful town, visit Lululemon for Heidi, and have dinner at an Indian restaurant before having a nice chat with dad as he waited to escape home before finally crashing in bed for 13 hours!!
We woke up late, rushed out to Melissa Steakhouse next door for a beautiful breakfast- we knew we were in Canada when we were offered a coffee before we had even sat down properly - yes - some people understand true coffee needs!!
Had a great day checking out Sulphur Mountain- by climbing halfway up the 3 hour trek, then back down again - rather than climbing the whole way and having to catch a gondola back down - way too scary!! This overload of activity was balance by a relaxing soak in the Banff Hot Springs - OH YES. Time to head off and visit Lake Louise to check out the ski mountain and lake - well worth the detour. Well actually we didn't realise it was a detour until we were about to head off and noticed that the sign to Radium Hot Springs was pointing back the way we came. Lucky we noticed it in enough time to check with a local while checking out dogs in a sledding team truck - of course - it wouldn't be a trip without checking out dogs at car parks!
Finally arrived in Invermere ready for the next stage of the trip. We found the Super 8, unloaded and drove to Dale and Cindy's house for a quick catch up and plan the next move, another quick chat to family at home, before collapsing into bed.
