Hugh, Anne and Hector's Sailing Adventures
Hi folks
We are back in Majorca after a brief trip over to Menorca where we got held up in Mahon with a few days of thunderstorms and torrential rain. I discovered how lethal flip flops are in wet weather by falling down a set of steps carrying a 6 pack of beer (no damage done to me or the beer luckily!).
We crossed from Porto Colom to Mahon which is about 60 miles. We had to motor all the way there as there was no wind, but we had a great sail back broad reaching all the way until about an hour out of Majorca when the wind swung round to our nose and we had a wet and bumpy finish.
Mahon is an amazing harbour, where you pick up a mooring buoy and then gigantic cruise ships and ferries pass within a few feet of you and you suddenly find a few hundred people waving to you (and photographing Hector).
We have a winter berth in Puerto Andraitx on the south west coast of Majorca. Its a really good place to be as restaurants and bars stay open all the year round and Hugh will be able to come out here through the winter to check on the boat (and fix more things!).
The autumn weather has been very turbulent with a lot of thunderstorms and rain interspersed with the usual roasting hot days. It can be 16 deg one day and 30 deg the next. My friend Christine came out for a week last week and was very lucky with the weather. We did day sailing from Andraitx round Dragonera island and visiting a couple of little resorts. It was all very relaxing and good fun. The water is still warm enough for swimming although I'm amazed at how quickly it is cooling down. We have one more week of visitors in October when Carol and Malcolm come out and then head for home at the end of October.
Hector has a flight booked back to Gatwick which is eyewateringly expensive (He isn't allowed to fly back to Edinburgh directly - usual uk scam) so we have to come via gatwick at a cost of 180 euros for me and 543 euros for Hector and that is just to Gatwick! (for comparison Hugh has a direct flight to Edinburgh for about 60 euros). Needless to say Hugh doesn't want to talk about it!
