Hugh, Anne and Hector's Sailing Adventures
Hi folks
We have just spent a very relaxing week (in sailing terms) with my Mum and Dad and niece Charlotte and nephew Colin. As Hugh mentioned it was my Mum's first time on a yacht and we were all a bit nervous on how that was going to work out. As it turned out, we needn't have worried as she took to it like a duck to water, whilst Charlotte and Colin turned a fetching shade of green. We spent one quite rough night at anchor in a narrow little cove called Cala Pi . The swell was significant and it was noisy as you could hear the waves crashing over the rocks nearby. I think I lay awake all night thinking my Mum will be hating this - especially since she was sleeping in the forepeak, which has the maximum up & down motion. But in the morning, she amazed me by saying how well she had slept and how she found the motion quite soothing and relaxing!!
Charlotte spent the week working hard on her suntan and depriving me of the latest Harry Potter book that they had brought out for me. Colin found it a bit of a struggle at first to get used to the heat, but lost no time in buying a smart new fishing rod and fished from the boat and from the various anchorages we visited. The sea temperature is just perfect for swimming just now and the water is beautifully clear in most places, so we did a fair bit of swimming and Colin perfected his backwards flip from the side of the boat.
Catering for 6 people has been a bit more challenging than usual as we have had a couple of fussy eaters on board (they know who they are!) but we managed to find something for everyone most of the time and enjoyed a couple of nice meals ashore too.
Hector was great this week - he didn't seem to mind the invasion at all and lost no time in training my mother to feed him chicken whenever she went near the fridge.
We had very windless conditions at the start of the week, but we did eventually get the sails up for my Dad to enjoy helming. We were broad reaching at 7 knots in nearly the right direction until somebody switched the wind off and we motored into port.
