Hugh, Anne and Hector's Sailing Adventures
Hi folks
Well we made it to Sardinia on our second attempt. The first we abandoned after an hour or so of being bashed around in big seas and 30 knot gusts and we stayed in Mahon for an extra couple of days. We found a corkscrew exhibition in a lovely Bodega in San Lluis, just outside Mahon and Hugh was in his element as the collector was a very nice lady from Paris, who was as keen to talk about corkscrews as Hugh is! We also managed to sink a fair amount of their lovely wine and food as we were the only visitors apart from a television crew. I think we were also filmed for Mahon tv, but luckily I've no way of seeing that.
Carloforte on the island of San Pietro was our landing point for Sardinia and we did the trip in just over 30 hours. The sea was a bit bumpy to start with, but the winds were very favourable and as evening fell we were flying along at 8.5 knots under sail, which is a bit scary once you are hurtling through the dark. (I know that 8.5 knots is a brisk walking pace, but it feels faster when its dark!)
We made it round to Cagliari to meet up with Brian who is cruising with us for the next two weeks, but we are now storm bound in Cagliari with NW gales (Mistral) that has been blowing for a couple of days. We hope to get away tomorrow and sail to Villasimius, then up the east coast.
It's wonderful being back in Italy, I feel like I'm living in Valvona and Crolla's except that the food and wine prices are a fraction of what they would charge.
regards to all
Anne
