More rain overnight so not much fun packing up a wet and muddy tent. They've had so much rain here the ground is completely soggy and dissolves into mud. Poor em went to the loo yesterday and slipped, landing on her bottom and was covered in sludge! Is very hard to keep mud and water out if the tent.
We had found a brochure that talks about the 'panoramic road' from Oslo to Bergen, up to andalsnes and back down again. We decided to go across rather than around the southern coast. It's supposed to be one of the most scenic road and rail trips in Europe, crossing a high plateau.
We drove all the way over to the end of Hatdangerfjord to stay at one of the recommended campsites, and I have to say was one of the most scenic and enjoyable road trips ever. Norway is beautiful, spectacularly so. The road wound up forested mountains, down into lush green valleys with pocket sized communities, snaked alongside rushing rivers and past waterfalls, and across high tundra like plateaus.
Indescribable really. Am so glad we came to Scandinavia, and feel very blessed today. We had a picnic at a roadside stop at the foot of mountains, and took both girls for their first outdoor toilet stop.
Seeings as how the population of Norway is quite small, particularly compared to the land mass, I am surprised by how populated it seems and how often you pass a dwelling or community. Saw lots more traditional houses today, wooden ones in red, yellow or orange. And some with grass roofs.
Towards the end we came through what were obviously winter ski resorts with lots of accommodation and ski lifts. We started encountering tunnels through the mountains, and suddenly popped out into this small lush green valley surrounded by steep rock faces towering over us. The campsite was in this valley, together with a small group of homes (pop 200) right on the water's edge. Stunning location. And the kids were ecstatic as there is a playground and a sunken trampoline! The guy at the shop is actually Dutch - says holland is too populated - is very helpful. Got some reindeer salami from the shop which we had with dinner. Not bad. Going to fall asleep happy.
