A driving day today as we took the long and circuitous route to Flam. We decided to drive up the 'coast' from Bergen to Rutledal then took the first of three ferries across to drive east alongside Sognefjord all the way to the tip. What an absolutely incredible and spectacular trip. The road clung to the edge of the fjord most of the way. Large rocky mountains swerving down into the water or softening into small pockets of bright green pastureland. Wherever the land was flat enough there were fishing villages by the water. Actually am surprised by how many houses there are. You never seem to go too far without seeing houses, often with the traditional turfed roof. All road journeys take much longer than you think they will as the roads are windy and the speed limit quite slow (max 80km/hr). Jason had ideas about going on this mountain pass road but by the end of a long day just wanted to arrive, so instead drove through the Laerdal tunnel, at 24.5 kms is the longest road tunnel in the world! Has three atrium lit with 'sunlight' lighting to keep drivers alert, but is pretty boring really!
Arrived in Flam quite late after getting a bit lost (thanks to ms tomtom) and very drizzly. Camping staff said it has been their wettest summer. Walked into town after kids in bed. Lovely small village feel very much centred around harbour and train station. Absolutely quiet at night. Looking forward to some sightseeing tomorrow.
