The train was old and creaky, with narrow hallways and narrower sleeping rooms. The decor was red velvet and old wood, and looked very much like the setting for an Agatha Christie mystery. Scott, Rachel, Katie and I shared a room, and played cards for a few hours before being rocked to sleep by the train.
It was raining in Vladimir when we arrived, although we soon found our taxi who took us into Suzdal. There were met Vera and Xena, two sisters whose homes we invaded for the night. They reminded me of picturebook grandmothers, and stuffed us full of tea and jam and biscuits for the entire time we were there. Suzdal is a picturesque village that was one of the founding towns of Russia. It is home to 33 churches and 3 monasteries, which is particularly astounding when the population of the town is only 11 000. We toured the Kremlin and a monastery before returning to Xena's for dinner and vodka.
The following morning we took the bus to Moscow. Scott played Celebrity Heads with Jen and Jenny, and I slept. Moscow really truly has to be seen to be believed...
