So now that we are very busy important working orchard people we are busy during the week and get some free time at the weekend, much like most working people in the world. So we have choices between hanging around the house with the family that live here or going and exploring on the weekend. The first weekend off we went over the Queenstown to see some friends. It's about an hour away and we stopped off in Arrowtown and had a giant cheese fondue for lunch in a French restaurant where the staff wore t shirts saying "I'm French" or "I'm not French". We went to a sweet shop and spent £15 on fudge which in hindsight may have been a bit excessive. Arrowtown is an old mining town and you can go gold panning in the streams which we will do one day.
We headed onto Queenstown for the night and went to the Ice bar which even though we had hats coats and gloves it was still pretty cold! We found the cheapest beers in NZ in a country bar where you have litre glasses and its only $10, and everywhere else its $6 or $7 for a small bottle so that was a cool place made even better by the fact they give out free cowboy hats and have a bucking bronco in the corner, which yes I went on, and no I didn't last more than a minute. We had money shots which tastes like banoffe pie, free pizzas, a whiskey shot that tasted like apple crumble, and ended it all with a giant devil burger, a burger as big as your head with bacon, burger, cheese, hash brown, lettuce, onion, aioli which kept us full for half a week.
The next weekend we took a trip to Wanaka, we had an amazing lunch (first NZ lamb, walked by the lake and explored before coming back to cook for the guys back home. The weather was sunny but so windy so we just wondered around Alexandra and stayed at the house chilling out ready to get back to the pruning tomorrow!
