Next morning we were picked up by Dippy and were on route to Picton. Here we had to buy a ferry ticket to take us across to the north island and to Wellington. Rebecca was an au pair in Wellington for 1 year and so was looking forward to coming back and showing us around. Once on board we found an area with a tv showing films so made ourselves comfortable there. My plan was to watch the first film and then get up and explore the boat and go up on deck as it would be quieter then, buuutt next thing I know I was watching some Drew Barrymore film about saving the whales and then all of a sudden 'ding dong can passengers make their way to the nearest exits'. I'd slept through the whole journey arghhhh.
We stayed at another base hostel in Wellington as it was cheaper than the one the bus suggested and this time a French lady, Cecil, joined us. We checked in JUST before the Kiwi Experience bus arrived (phew) and headed up to our allocated room, but soon discovered the 6 bed dorm with '4 free beds' actually only had one. Anna and I went downstairs to try to rectify the situation and they told us the beds were actually vacant but must have been forgotten about during cleaning so someone would be up in 1/2 hour to sort them. When we got back Cecil wasn't happy with this so went down herself and came back with keys for a more expensive room and free drink coupons for us at the bar haha.
That night Rebecca took us for food and ice cream (in the cold - Wellington isn't called the windy city for nothing) and the plan was to go for a few drinks but becuse we were all exhausted, skint and had an 11 hour journey the next day we decided to save ourselves for Auckland. I think I'd have liked to spend longer in Wellington to get to see the city properly but in order to do that I'd have to stay 3 nights (winter bus timetable) and I don't have enough days left before my onward flight to do this :( Next time maybe...
