We set off about 9.45 in the morning towards the northern town of Picton. This is where you catch the ferry over to Wellington which all but 3 of us did. Myself, an American girl Jessie and a new girl we picked up from Kaikoura called Anna were to stay the night in Picton at a hostel called The Villa.
Our driver Nat was really good because she always announced sights to look at out the window on the drive and gave random bits of information about whichever town we were driving through. At one point on the drive this morning she pulled over and took us on a 10 minute walk up a hill to a waterfall which had about 20 baby seals all playing in the bottom of it, about 3 metres away from us!
We finally arrived in Picton and Jessie Anne and I checked into the Villa and met a german girl called Rebecca who was staying in our dorm. The 4 of us went out to explore to town and it was a really nice sunny day and relatively warm compared to yesterday. We found a second hand store where I bought a massive fluffy knitted teal coloured jumper haha which is probably completely hideous and I don't think I'd ever wear it in England but its so warm and was only $10 (£5)! It smells a bit like cupboards and grannies..
Anna, Rebecca and I seem to get on really well and we spent the afternoon just hanging around the hostel in a treehouse (!). Anna and I are joining the same bus tomorrow to head south and Rebecca has booked an unlimited travel pass for Intercity buses but is heading the same direction as us so will hopefully be able to meet up along the way. Jessie is just staying the night before catching the morning ferry over to Wellington.
That night at 8.30 a group of us were just sat in the dining area when we hears a guy approaching singing and playing guitar. He was followed by two girls carrying bowls and a dish and his words were "apple crumble in the kitchen, woahhh, crumble in the kitchen at 8" played to the music from the song I've Got A Hangover! Turns out that there's a bakery next door and every night they send an apple crumble over to the hostel for backpackers to eat for free! It was delicious yummm.
There was a chimaneer in the courtyard so that evening we all sat around it chatting and playing guitar. It was a nice night before we headed to bed ready for the bus to Nelson tomorrow.
