Ok we are in the beach town of Nha Trang and good stuff it is too. Our 10 hour bus journey here is done and was really simple with some great views along the way.
Our first day was a bit damp so we investigated our surroundings, started building our plans for China and went to Nha Trang Cathedral. To compensate for the lack of beach time we decided to go out for a few drinks. We got a Long Island Ice Tea each which was exceptionaly strong and served in a jelly bean jar. We had a few more cocktails elsewhere which were equally strong. After these and a few beers it was definately time to go home.
Our second day was much sunnier so we went to the beach got some deckchairs and did nothing much but read and doze. A very successful day. We had these baguettes which are sold on the street all around which had beef, chicken and pork in. Obviously there is the old dog meat here so you always look at your meat and think maybe... If it was a dog baguette then it was still very tasty. Our third day followed a similar pattern as we read on the beach this time without the deck chairs, ahh doing nothing is challenging. We had more baguettes (dog or not). In the evening we headed for an Indian restaurant called Omars which was so good. Really yummy.
The following day was a bit grim so instead of the beach we went to a pagoda which has a large buddha high on the hill behind it. The pagoda was beautiful and we walked the 150 steps to find the buddha; about half way up there is also a reclining buddha. The facial features of Vietnamese Buddhas are very different to those of the Thais. After this we went to Nha Trang cathedral to see if we could go in this time. It is surprisingly beautiful as it is made of concrete blocks. The cross behind the altar is red neon outlined as is the halo of Mary and back lighting as well. I know odd but that seems to definately be the thing in temples and chrches the main shrine decorated in tons of neon. Who knows?
Today we are going to be heading to Hoi Ann or to be more specific tonight. We are travelling overnight on a coach with beds. This is going to be an experience. It is going to take about 11/12 hours and we will have not quite made it to the infamous 17th paralell. Vietnam is vast! Hoi Ann is a very old town which is a heritage sight si should be interesting.
We've also just realised its almost December. It doesn't feel like December. I know the UK has snow and I'm slightly jealous. But I'll get my fill in Russia. Our plan in China is pretty much formed and it now looks like we will be in Chengdu for Christmas; we have to plan carefully as China is not as cheap to travel around and if you want to travel on sleepers you need to pre-book. Chengdu is a province capital so we should be able to speak to who we need to. Chengdu is also where the pandas are so who knows I might see a panda on Christmas day. Jealous???
Not a huge amount to write as we have been so incredibly lazy, hehe!!! Anyway hope you are seeing these.
Love Ruth and Janec
