HUE! (blog two today guys - one in Hoi an and one in Hue)
We caught an early bus from Hoi an which only takes four hours so arrived in Hue about lunchtime. First job get somewhere to stay. So, trying to not get too frustrated at the touts following us virtually all the way we headed off to a place we'd found online we liked the look of. We got there and they had space, so we moved in. Yay!! We are good at this now. After settling in we headed off in search of food. We ate at a place called Little Saigon (I know wrong city) which was yummy and stopped us getting so irritated by the touts. We decided to go and investigate the citadel (the old walled town and main attraction in the city). Here we encountered rain not monsoon rain but continual rain like in the UK, not really hard but hard enough to get you pretty wet. After a while of wandering the citadel and examining its key features we established we wanted warm showers as we were damp.
Our second day in Hue was not looking any better then the first. Like September i the UK. But we headed off with cagoules on to the imperial citadel (the royal place inside the city). Even in the damp it was beautiful temples. pagodas and gardens. Dragons everywhere - so Janec especially liked them. After much walking in the rain the need for tea was definate and quickly fulfilled. In the afternoon we went to a few musums and a pagoda, which we got a bit lost on the way too. By late afternoon we were very wet and headed back for warm showers. mmmm.
Yesterday we hired bikes and cycled out of town. We headed to a small pagoda and the esplanade which were both really peaceful. But the best one was the second pagoda which was next a pretty little lake and had a monk school. It was beautiful and in a small pine forest so absolutely quiet (a rarity in these parts). The ride back had some beautiful countryside views and let us some interestin cemetries. we also saw a lady making incence sticks. With our bikes we also explored the lakes in the citadel and Janec has decided he wants a house with a lake. I road across a juction; scary stuff on a bike when having to cross traffic but Im alive. Yay!
Our bus to Hanoi leaves this evening, a long joueny, about 14 hours on a sleeper. Only 5 days and then into China the last leg of our epic journey (well the one we have to figure out). Vietnam has so far been an absolute dream to travel in. Everything is very easy and the people are lovely. There are many Chinese influences here in architecture but also French. I've got many things I wish we could have done and several plans to come back.
Love and Hugs
