G'day from the east coast!
We'll we're on the final leg of our oz adventure, its 8 weeks today since we set off from sunny heathrow. Wow time fly's when your having fun!!
So we made it off our flight from Alice Springs to Cairns, it was amazing to see the changing landscape from the plane, seeing the red sand turn to rainforest and ocean. When we steped of the plane the humidity hit us. Spent the night in Cairns and decided to head out of our hostel and hire a care with two German friends we had met on our outback trip.
Picked up a bargin hire car and headed north towards the rainforest area of cape tribulation. On our way we stoped off in a lovely place called Kurranda where they have the largest butterfly sanctury in australia. To get to Kurranda we took a trip on the skyrail over the rainforest and croc infested waters, amazing views! We then decided to buy a tent... (to be continued....)
After an afternoon of driving in stormy weather (we though the wipers were going to fly off the hire car) finally made it to the Daintree and Cape Tribulation (tropical wet rainforests) area. We found a great hostel which consisted of cool cabin/ safari tent things, it felt like we were sleeping amongst all the wildlife saw soo many insects (the good ones) frogs and geckos.
Next morning we woke up to the sound of wildlife and decided to check out the sunrise from nearby Cow bay (stinger and croc infested area). Someone in the hostel had told us sunrise was 5 am so we headed off at 4.30 and waited... and waited..... and waited... we could still see the stars and sound of crashing waves but no sign of any kind of light other then the moon. so the only thing to do was head back to bed! Well at least we made an effort better luck next time.
After a few more hours sleep we had a long day exploring cape tribulation and cool walks seeing turtles crabs, butterflies and big trees. Highligh of the day was the daintree ice cream company we tried wattle seed icecream, cocanut, passion fruit and black sapote, was yummy.
Next part of the adventure was togo off the tourist track and head inland to a place called Yunggaburra. We found an awesome hostel called 'on the wallaby'. The guy that owned it was a chilled out pot smoking aussie who knew his wildlife and bush survival skills. We spent two night here exploring the areas stunning waterfalls and lakes, including lake esham where we went for a swim, full length was 800m we got about half way and remembered we were going night canoeing so we needed to save our arms.
The night canoeing was organised by the hostel, 8 of us went out at 9pm to a local fresh water lake that had a croc in! We each had a fliash light to see our way to the lake then we hoped into the 2 man canoe and went round in circles! (It was a real test for our relationship hehe). Once we managed to get a forward motion we spoted possums. This was so scary but such an amazing experience, especially as for half of the 3 hours we were out we had no flash lights.
As true travellers we picked up a packet of mash a few days before... so this night was the night to try it, it was rank! Tasted like chemicals, so we chucked lots of pepper in it and it helped a little.
Next day was valentines so we went for a lovely romantic walk around one of the lakes and very unromantically discovered leached in out trainers. One sucked the like our of adams toe (picture will be posted soon) and the other 6 b*****s were hiding in our trainers! So we had had enough and decided to head back to civilisation and the safety of hot running water and no packet mash............
