Dobrey-den as these folks say...been in kyiv for a couple of days now and its been a culture shock to say the least! landed in lovely 3degrees rainy conditions accustomed more to manchester than bahrain/kiev! next tricky subject came in 2 parts really, a) nobody here speaks a word of the queens and b) there alphabet is totally cyrillic with no english signs whatsoever! I knew about this already but the extent of non-englishness (without meaning to sound too touristy!) is unbelievable...anyway eventually got to grips with what went on here- its a very nice city thats an amazing mix of Soviet-era buildings filled with entirely capitalist stores...there are 4 mcdonalds within 200yards of eachother on independence square! spent most of my time head buried in my lonely planet guide and have managed to visit the jewish memorial at babyn yar, st sophia's cathedral, the caves monastry (which is a monastry with caves and tunnels that saved thousands from the germans in the war) and various other cathedrals and churches that are all very pretty to look at but dont mean a great deal to me if im honest! managed to find an Irish bar with a few expats for the United-Milan second leg (complete washout that saw me wander drunken through the streets of Kyiv back to my hotel alone at 2am...).
Today has been quite enjoyable as there was some sort of pro-communist rally/concert going on in Independence square that i managed to get caught up in...lots of people donning the hammer and sickel like the good old days as one slighly intoxicated student told me! and tomorrow im watching Dynamo Kiev vs Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk, a thoroughly overpriced fixture at 50p a ticket, should be a goodun! then its the overnight train to Moscow and then onto St Petersburg to start the trans siberian on monday...
sorry again no photos cos they dont have USB ports on these computers ( i havent taken many here either cos its all just buildings)
