With Biren and Jason gone to Rio for the Russia game Mike and I went for a walk down the beach to look for more World Cup shirts. We came upon a bunch of police who had approx 6 youths on their knees and hands over their heads on the beach while standing around behind them with at least one handgun drawn. They were searching their belongings and their scooters presumably looking for stolen items.
After our walk off to the pub to watch the first game and wait for Joao. He had promised to take us to the fort today, Santa Clarita or something. On the way we had to stop for directions. Joao's friend had to pull over get out and cross the street. The people he approached couldn't get away from this skinny kid fast enough. He came back to the car saying "I couldn't get directions. They were afraid of me and couldn't get away fast enough". At the fort, Joao and his friend seemed very into it however having seen many like it in canada it did not hold the same amount of interest for us but was still cool.
It was interesting that the fort was almost run down as stated by Joao and not controlled by the state but likely by the neighbourhood. It cost 2R to get in and a young boy was our tour guide for about 10 min then asked for tips and left. We toured the fort for an hour or so, taking many pictures (yes the Paraiba state flag was there) before heading back. Joao and his friend were too sore and tired from last night to join us in any further activities so they dropped us off and went home for the night around 6pm. We also found out that Joao had slept in till 11am and his friend had called in to work as he was too sore and tired to go to work. I guess we broke them last night. Kinda sad when you consider we are 40ish and they are 25. Brazilians, ... Nice people but can't drink, can't dance anything but the 2-step Samba.
t the pub for USA vs Portugal. Maybe 20-30 yanks in attendance I. The pub including one obviously inebriated guy who is acting crude towards everyone woman that walks by whole his 6 firiends at his table (of both sexes) look on. Game starts with anthems and they all stand up and proceed to butcher their own anthem including wrong and off sync lyrics. Portugal score in first few minutes - crowd becomes quiet until 10 min later when two players collide and as american gets up he elbows portuguese player in chin - not caught by officials but cheered by yanks watching slow replay. Drink guy is now passed out on table - both friends and waiters ignore him.
End of first half, I glimpse over at passed out yank and notice one of his buddies with his pinkie finger up his nose to the knuckle. He then pulls it out and examines his prize before flicking it away. Pure class this bunch.
All quiet until the US netted a great goal to tie things up around the 20th minute of the 2nd half. That pub erupted and sure enough the drunk woke up. He ten proceeded to spew profanities for the next 5 minutes until he tried to light a smoke and was asked to step out. There's one in every crowd.
USA scored again in the 81st minute to take the lead and the bar erupted. We were clapping too, the US team really did deserve to win. Drunk guy got even more obnoxious slamming chairs and calling anyone who would listen on to a fight, even long after his compatriots all settled down. Just when it looked like there was no God, Portugal put one in with only 60 seconds left in added time. You could have heard a pin drop except for Mike and I cheering and it was Beautiful!!! All is right with the universe again.
Now it was time to head down the beach and enjoy the party Joao Pessoa was putting on.
