We are currently in Tulsa and Winter Storm Titan has hit with a vengeance so we will stay here for the day as th roads are icy and there is Sleet, Freezing Rain and Snow. YUM.
Since we left St Robert again we have seen some amazing things and met some real characters of the road.
But first let me update the World's largest score.
We missed the giant Coke Bottle in Joplin but it was still there We did see the WORLD FAMOUS Heartland Antique Mall but it doesn'e count in the largest.
WORLD'Largest # 9 is The World's Largest Gift Shop
# 10 World's Longest ( still counts) continous wooden chain hand whittled by someone who had too much time on his hands. This is in a Museum at Baxter Springs Kansas and is as long as a 95 storey building
#11 The World's largest Macdonalds store sraddles the I 44 highway at Vinita in Kansas
#12 The World's largest Totem Pole near Chelsea Oklahoma
#13 The World's largest Gun Museum in Claremore Oklahoma
Our first stop after St Robert Missouri was Lebanon Missouri (Came right after Cuba Missouri) there we saw the Munger Moss Motel which has been run by the same couple for ovr 40 years. In their Lobby gift shop they have a collection of toy semi trailers that would be worth big money. Even have an Australian Linfox road train. We met Ramona and had a chat for a while.
Marshfield came next , the home of Dr Edwin Hubble. There is a model of his telescope (1/4 scale) in the town square.
Springfield Missouri was a dead loss as the railroad museum was only open Saturdays and The Giant Pistol was no longer there (perhaps taken by the giant cowboy) Wild Bill Hickock is rumoured to have shot someone here. not surprised
We also missed the typewriter toss held each year in April on Secretaries day when typewriters are thrown from a height of 50 feet at a bullseye target Shame really !!
Then to Paris Springs where we met Gary Turner a real character cum eccentric. We spent an hour talking to him at his museum/ old gas sation/ junk heap. Said he was a hilbilly originally and got married at16 but Mum was glad he married outside the family as it brought some new blood into the line. Gary is a self confessed collector and hoarder of junk.
This part of the country is known as the Ozarks. famous hillbilly country.
We stayed the night at Carthage at the Best Budget Motel. ($49.95 per room per night)
Unfortunately much is closed for the winter and this was the case with the Superman museum at Carterville.
Then into Kansas. There are only 13 miles of route 66 in Kansas, but really good
At Baxter Springs we saw a really good museum with a fantastic collection of memorabillia. During the Civil War there was a significant attack on Union forces at Baxter Springs by Quantrill,s Raiders. The Jesse James gang is supposed to have robbed the bank here. Ther is some doubt abiut this.
Now to Oklahoma,(where the wind certainly comes Whistling down the Plains)
Mickey Mantle,s home is meant to be in Commerce OK but we couldn't identify it. Lynn Riggs house is in Claremore ( Author who inspired the Musical Oklahoma) Couldn't find the Surret with the Fring on top which was meant to be there
Miami OK Boasts the 1929 vintage Coleman Theatre, quite beautiful.
It was near here that we saw the giant Totem Pole
So here we are about 1/3 of route 66 complated (about 850 miles)
Today we will stay put until the weather improves, then on the Oklahoma City
