Today we're headin out park hopping! Starting in Dolores park cafe where serendipity has seen fit to provide this evenings park style entertainment.. We just found out there's a free outdoor screening of Dr Strangelove! One of my fav films of all time! At Washington sq park. Whoop!
We passed through the Castro San Frans gay capital, lined with raindow flags and assless chaps its pretty mega gay. Mostly man gay too but its cool to see same sex couple comfortable enough to walk around holding hands.
Crossed the rocky peaks of Carona park with amazing city scapes, then bumped into an English couple who lived in the house next to where Jefferson airplane lived. I think the young mum was a little home sick and pleased to hear our accents.
The houses on the hill by Buena vista park were idilic and quiet on a hill in the city. The park itself was a hill forest right in the centre of San Fran! Surreal and tranquil.
Walking down to Height Ashbury generation X culture and alternative rock vibes seep out of every corner. The shops are full of alternative rock gear, grungy and very cool. I had to buy a skull filled with taquila! Tattoo shops abound and a few tramps. One of which failed to get a quarter out of me.. On hearing my accent he shuffled along behind me for a block grumbling quietly about how he'd lived in Cali for 20 years and I wasn't even from the US. I thought about reminding him that how the only natives in the US were Indians, then I thought about stabbing him up :) not worth it I reckoned.
Then we hit the huge Golden Gate park. Kind of too big for a park.. there's roads running through it because you know how everyone drives everywhere over here. Even to the Japanese Tea Garden in it's centre. Which is beautiful and where I write this.
So an urge comes over me.. we hop in a taxi and cross all the way back to the other side of the city to Union Square. This is where Malcom X read the emancipation proclamation. Here there's an art show outside in the square. The stuff is amazing! We find an artist selling what can be described as Dali meets Picasso meets Jazz.. I'm tripping so we buy a small original. So that was that urge huh. The artist is a charming lady who takes down our websites and seems as interested in our film and illustration projects as we are in her art!
So a quick change of clothes later (in the financial centre) in the middle of the street.. people look at us like we just robbed a bank and are trying to lose the cops by changing our clothes. It's all a little bit Jason Bourne! We grab some dinner at our default italian restaurant where a couple of Texans pay for a old time black singer to perform Fly me to the moon for us.. he's very good!
After that we shoot down to Washington Square park to take in the free screening of Dr Stranglelove sat amongst our fellow San Franciscans. Great atmosphere, amazing film, I get drunk on wine and after it all we hit a late night cafe for coffee then Visuvios to hang with the beatniks and sip a dark n stormy before the taxi home.
