As expected the pace of life in Oaxaca is very different to that of Mexico City. This sleepy colonial city comes alive at night, and I have enjoyed many a Cerveza in the local Jazz clubs and bars! Last night, after a day visit to the local Mezcal factory (a spirit made from the same plant as Tequila) and a few samples later...my new found amigos and I managed to stumble upon a club that appeared to be popular with guys dressed up as girls...! Luckily disguised as a rough, bearded traveller I managed to avoid any attention! The day itself was the highlight of my 4 days here. We took a tour high into the mountains to witness local communities weaving rugs, to see Zapotecan ruins and finally to 'Hierve el Agua' - a natural spring located high on the side of a mountain, where i jumped into my speedo's (only joking!) and took a swim! The view was incredible from the infinity pools although cold!
During the day my wandering has continued and I have spent a lot of time having long lunches in the 'Zocalo' (the main square) watching the world go by and also at the local craft markets. There I also tried a local delicacy - grasshoppers cooked in chilli! Here they sprinkle them on salads instead of croutons! Thankfully though, the food here has been fantastic, although my first attempt at a Yoga class on a full stomach was not my best decision! It was a bizarre experience but I came out feeling suprisingly relaxed...I'm tempted to go again!
Next I make the overnight trip to the Pacific Coast and to Puerto Escondido, said to have some of the best waves for surfing in the world...I have a lesson booked and hope to witness some amazing sunsets! New (and more exciting) pictures to follow!
