Buenos Dias Gringos!
After a long flight via Toronto including 3 meals, 3 movies and no sleep, i finally arrived to an empty Mexico City. Where everyone went to at night initially baffled me, only to be informed on my arrival at the hostel that not even the locals are seen on the streets at night for fear of mugging or kidnap! (Don't worry Mum, I'm in bed before dark!) It is a city of massive contrast - wealth and poverty in equal measure patrolled by the biggest armed police presence I've ever seen, mostly corrupt I'm told...
After overcoming the jetlag, I have wandered the streets like a true explorer - flip-flops, back-pack, my lonely planet bible and a work in progress beard! Using the metro system to get around I've been to more museums and historic buildings than i can remember. I even managed to walk in to a 100,000 people strong protest through the streets marching for teachers pensions! I've been working on my Spanish too by ordering tacos from street vendors parked at almost every corner, and served with enough chilli to blow my sandals off!
To balance all this culture, last night i went to see some authentic Mexican wrestling - WWF style! A few beers and tequilas later at a roof top club, i was back to the hostel, which is amazing value for money. I have met some nice people here - a couple of Aussies, a few fellow Brits - i am having a really great time after the initial apprehension.
So tomorrow i leave for Oaxaca, apparently the artistic centre of Mexico. It should be warmer too, given the change in altitude. Hope you enjoy the photos, i will keep you all updated.
