Hello!
Right now I'm in an internet cafe in the wonderful place of Surat Thani. Or not so wonderful. We are only here for a nice stop of 6 hours for our 12 hour trip to Bangkok. Other than that the past 3 weeks in Thailand have been awesome. We have seen some great highs and some lows but its all part of the adventure :)
3 weeks ago we flew out from Heathrow on a 11 hour flight to Bangkokit wasnt so bad compared to our other forms of transport. When we first got to Bangkok we had a long train journey which we got little bunk beds wasnt so bad got a better nights sleep on there with the cockroaches, than on the areoplane with a screaming bratty kid! after the train we had got onto a boat to take us to Kho Phangnan. So after a long 28 hours of traveling you could expect us to be pretty realived to put our bags down and get ourselves into the sea... Not quite but we all know what happend!
Koh Phangan was a good introduction on what to expect from thailand (except for the rocks in the sea), people we thought were being nice and helping were only just trying to mug over the stupid english travelers who had no clue about the currency! We took a boat trip out to go fishing which was organised by our villa owner (the thai version of Dell boy Trotter!) it was fun catching all kids of beautiful fish (but then sadly watching them die a painful death!). We had hired out some scooters to get around the island. We went to the rental store and the woman just took our money and showed us the bikes. No introduction to ride the bike let alone starting the dam thing! The only tip she gave us was 'SLOW SLOW!' Great! But in all fairness it was pretty cool riding around on them, it is definately the way to get around. Maybe if you have your head screwed on properly lots of tourists forget about saefty and end up injuring themselevs!
For new years eve we went to the full moon party, was probably the best new years party i have ever been to! drinks were by the bucket load and entertainment of watching people climbing up a pole was priceless!
We went on a trip that involved an elephant ride, crocadile show, trip to a chinese temple, swimming in the kings swimming pool (a cool water fall) and snorkeling on Ko Ma beache, was really nice veiw but snorkelling wasnt too pleasant as there was baby jellyfish which kept stinging us so it got cut short.
We moved on from Koh Phangan to Koh Toa it seemed more picture perfect the beaches had whiter sand and the sea was so blue! On Koh toa we went on an 3 day open water scuba course. I t was the highlight of the island getting to see the fish face to face, it really is another world down there! Siam scuba school really looked after us we paid one lump sum that included the dourse and free accomodation (which was only a week old), i would definately recommend it.
From Koh Toa to Krabi we had to get on a night boat, it didnt start well and it didnt get any better inbetween or at the end. We got jammed onto a pick up truck with 12 people in and their bags. Once off the truck we got herded off to the boat where there was many other back packers waiting to board. Nearly slipping of the plank onto the boat it was plain to see i wasnt going to get my 8 hours of sleep. The boat consisted of 2 levels on each side of the floors there was a matress ( if that what you would call a sand filled mat) than went all the way down the boat. With just a sand bag for a pillow and a rusty fan this was our bed for the night. each floor held 70 people on them. Cant complain at least i wasnt the one stuck next to a large woman!
Next stop after koh toa was a short and sweet at Krabi, nothing really much to say about it, food was alright, accomodation was average, boat trip touts annoying as hell!
Krabi was just a lay over before we went to Ko Phi Phi, which was definetly worth the wait. I thougth koh toa had a beautiful beaches but this really took my breath away! It had everything you wanted right at your door step good clean cheap food and pleanty for you to do. We went on a trip around the islands misqueto island, monkey island and Maya Bay (where the beach was filmed.) It was great fun snorkeling round each destination especially misquito beach, we spotted a few of the fish that we learnt scuba diving, we got quite fond of the parrot fish. We were a little disapointed by maya bay i think its because we expected it to be like the film. The beach was packed full of people who must have expected the same, there was small boats all along the shore which kind of took the magic away. Overall the trip was well worth the money 500 bhat for the whole day. There are lots of trips you can go one but we have learnt the trick is to shop around because you can always find something that you can get more for your money!
Leaving Phi Phi ( a little sad) we headed to Phuket, another boat and early morning. We went straight to the city and fell in love with a dohnut shop called 'Mister Dohnut' definetly a must vist of thialnd BEST DOHNUTS EVER! when vernturing out in the town it wasnt long until we got picked up by a tuk tuk driving willing to take us all around where ever we wanted for a 'GOOD PIRCE!" our first stop was at the aqurim only cost us 100 baht, pretty much walked in and walked out, saw quite a few fasinating fish in the short visit. next stop was randomly to a shooting rand. Was not expecting to be firing my first gun that day! As soo as we arrived they pratically jumped at us handing over the guns. Worte my name down on a sheet and that was that 10 seconds later im shooting a bloody weapon that can kill! My weedy arms could just about take the after shock of the gun fire. Like the aqurium it was a very short vist the 10 bullets we were given went fast and it wasnt long until we were back in the tuk tuk. We had ran out of ideas and thought we would go back to our room, the tu tuk driver had otehr ideas. Thought we might like looking in a Gem shop. We obviously did not look like we were in any position to buy what tehy were selling! We learnt another lesson, you just have to be blunt and say NO! We stayed in hotel that was pure luxuary compared to the other places we have stayed, IT HAD A HOT SHOWER!! There wasnt much to do in the evening other than eat and shop but this is all we ever do and we LOVE IT!?!?!
The next day we moved onto the other side of Phuket and went to the beach. A lazy hot day on the beach was what the doctor ordered. We went snorlking in the sea and saw more of our favourite the parrot fish. We also made friends with a baby bay fish that kept following us. everytime i turned round there was one staring at me, was pretty cute though! Again that evening we did what wqe do best ate and shopped! When we were wondering round the shops we were shocked to come across a stall that was selling weapons. Weapons that would be illgal in england! There were large knives , ninja like throwing blades, knuckle dusters and tazzor guns. we naively thought the tazor guns would not have batteries in so playing around pretending to tazor each other seemed funny. Until the shop over came over and laughed and turned it on. As soon as the gun started to snap we stopped laughing and walked the other way. Thailand is full of suprises. We have one more week left and im sure there is more to come. I will give you the next update sooner so it all isnt in one lump!
LOVE BACK TO ENGLAND
