Wed 27th June 2007:
We spent a great last day in Kanchanaburi visiting the Earwan National Park. It has a 7 tiered waterfall & lagoons. Most people only make it as far as the 2nd tier & swim in the water & under the fall. But now we're hardcore explores & have the ability to scale great heights we made it up & beyond to the 7th tier!! We dived in & swam with the fishes but Rosey couldn't handle them nibbling at her so had to get out & ruin the day.
We are now in Ayutthaya, the old capital city of Thailand, about 50 miles north of Bangkok. We arrived yesterday & headed from the bus station to a recommended guest house about 1/2 mile away. After walking for about 10 mins I heard a great yelp come from behind. I turned round & expected to see one of the numerous stray dogs lieing in the road under a lorry. Instead it was Rosey on the floor with her legs & arms waving frantically in the air, her rucksack between her & the pavement, desperatley trying to pull herself back up. If you can imagine a flipped turtle you've pretty much got the image. Turns out she wasn't looking where she was going as she was too busy gawping through the window of a clothes shop & tripped over a sleeping dog. Still not sure whether it was the dog or Rosey who gave out the great yelp!!
Today we hired a couple of bikes. They were both womens bikes with the lowered crossbars & baskets in the front, like the wicked witch in The Wizard of Oz. Not very good for me street cred!! We cycled round the city visting various old temples & ruins. On one of our stops we returned to our locked bikes but could not open the padlock on one of them. We tried for about 15mins but could not get the friggin thing open. Not really knowing what to do I left Rosey with the locked bike & cycled on the other bike across the city to the tourist police. I tried explaining to them but they couldn't understand me so they sent me to the normal police. They too didn't understand but somehow I managed to get them to take me back to where the locked bike was to try & explain. With lots of miming & charades (early years of watching Give Us A Clue helped here) I managed to get them to see the problem. They then took me back across the city to a building site where one of the policemens mates was working. We all four (that's me, 2 police & the builder) travelled back across the city to the locked bike. The builder whipped out his angle grinder & extension lead & released the bike. I left Rosey with the now free bike & went back across the city, dropped the builder back off at work, then back to the police station where my bike was. What a cafuffle!! I offered the builder some money for his help but he wouldn't take any. Can you imagine police in england doing all that for you?!?
Well.. time for some more rice & noodles & a few Chang Beers (6.4% & just 80 pence a litre...brilliantttt!!)
