We arrived in Laos after a 2 day boat/bus trip from Pai. We had a pretty easy bus trip up to Chaing Rai to stay over night in get up early doors for our exiting boarder cross into Laos. It was really exciting...we were so close that we could see Las across the river!!
Our boat left the boarder of Thailand pretty early and once we had sorted out our visa with imigration we made a run for the boat to try and get seats together.....unfortunalety we were beaten by pretty much everyone who had planned ahead and got themseves cushty little corner seat for the 6 hours ahead. By the time the the boat was ready to leave, the was bearly room to walk through, they had squeezed as many peole as they possibly could into every inch of every wooden bench they could find.....just when we thought it was impossible to fit any more in...then out came the tiny plasic chairs.
2 sore arses and 6 hours late we arrived in ----------. Its a quite a strange little place which is exactly what you would expect it to be....catering for tourists that arrive on day and leave the next. The top end of the village has hostels, restaurants and convenience shops all crammed together, offering ewhat ever you could possibly need.....then the other end of the village seemed 50 years behind, it was cometely different to the other end of the street. When we walked down the road, people just stopped and stared as if they had never every seen a western person or another person for that matter, in their village in their entire lives! This was the firs time it had really happend to us so I'm sure you can imagine how strange it felt!
After a sleeless night due to a bunch of lads singing come on eileen and then puking their guts up opposite our room...we were ready for the next day of our boat trip down the Mekong.....This time, the boat was definately more comfortable, the seats we're still made of planks off wood but you could reach the floor and you could move around without treading on people which was definatley an added bonus. The views along the Mekong Roiver are fantatsic and it was such a lovely ewas to travel between countries and exerience something slightly different.
When we arrived in Luag rabang, we we're so excited! we grabbed our things and made a run fr it to try and bag ourselves a guest house before the rush and we manged to find a really lovely place just out side th docking area which was complete result.
The town itself is really stunning, very picturesque and a very quaint. They have a number of gorgeous retsaurants, cafe's and bars that spill out onto the road and you can really feel the rench influence.
