Arrived in Hong Kong safe n sound, took us an hour of roaming the busy, sweaty streets with our overpacked backpacks to find the hostel as I stupidly forgot to bring the directions or the address. All I brought was the phone number which I managed to write down wrong & so when I called I got through to some local who couldn't speak any english other then "long nummer, long nummer". Well, eventually we found our place of abode & was shown our room. Let's just say the room wasn't the most spacious, it was basically a double bed squeezed into a room the size of a king size bed, but we liked to call it home. The most important thing is it had air conditioning, although we couldn't use it at night as it clunked, wheezed & whirled making sleep impossible. The bathroom was pretty unique in that the toilet was actually located within the shower cubicle, you could actually sh1t, shower & shave at exactly the same time!!
Our first day we were suffering with serious jet lag & once we checked in our room at midday went straight to bed only to eventually peel ourselves from the mattress 23 sweaty hours later.
My first experience of the local cuisine consisted of noodles, pork slices(which looked suspiciously like dogs ears), in milk!! Needless to say it gave me Hong Kong Pooey & I only just made it back in time to the comfort & safety of our hostel toilet... still, at least I was able to have a shower at the same time to clear up the mess.
Tue 12th: Today we caught the tram up to Victoria Peak at a height of 550 metres for (guide book language: the most spectacular cityscape views in the world) only to find our heads amongst the low settling clouds & could see no further then the nearest tree at about 15 feet away. Still, the clouds looked pretty.
Somehow whilst ambling amongst the clouds we lost our way & couldn't find the station to get the tram back down the 550 meters. So we walked. Bear in mind that 550 meters is as the stone falls (see what I done there), so descending by foot spirraling around the peak probably equalled more like 550 miles!!... or at least it seemed that far.
The rest of the week in HK we crammed in as much as possible. We went to the the 10,0000 Buddha's Monastery...which actually has 12,801 (but who's counting...), went to see the largest seated Buddha in the world but got there and couldn't see a thing due to low cloud (again!!)-although he did give us a cheeky little smile at one point when the clouds cleared for a second, which we're counting as a good omen. Went for a walk in the national park and came face to face with a wild brown bear!! so we ran like a couple of girls back to safety...I'm convinced it was a dog but Andy is certain it was a bear with big pointy teeth!!
