cant remember where i got to in the last blog so ill just start on the trekking week !
arrived in the outskirts on suphanburi ready for the 4 days of hardcore trekking ahead of us, armed with my waterproof trousers, an old army tent not really suitable for anything but burning on the campfire, a pack of biscuits & an 80 baht bottle of whiskey. everything we would need !
The first day of trekking was really fun, as always safety was a top priority when we climbed up the waterfall with no harnesses or any way to stop us falling when we were jumping rocks with 20ft drops. Luckily the waterproof trousers were around for when i fell in the river about 5 times, unfortunately though i had no such protection for when the branches hit you in the face !
Our next challenge was to set up the tents when we arrived at camp. Judging by the holes that had been ripped into the flysheets on top of our tents, we decided that our dryest option would be to set up camp under this sheltered concrete area on the campsite. We didnt realise that this was possibly the worst decision we could have made until we woke up the next morning feeling like we had been in a carcrash with backs that felt like cardboard.
Started the days trekking feeling quite optimistic when we saw our trekking leader (we named him rambo) wearing just flip flops & carrying just a knife & a bottle of water. That was until we started climbing the mountain of doom ! took us about 2 hours to get to the top, after the boys decided pushing us up would be the fastest option ! We all made it up alive though & the view was amazing ! Getting back down was also a bit of a mission as there were a few landslides of rubble, but i had my trusty trekking stick with me & didnt fall over once !
In the afternoon we went caving, unprepared with no torches or hats or anything, rambo came to the rescue with candles ! so we headed into these caves using our candles to see, although they werent really the easiest thing to keep alight when you are crawling on your stomach between rock & there is a draught coming through ! most of resorted to taking loads of pictures so the flashes from the cameras would light up the caves ! genius. Saw some massive crystal formations & lots of jumping spiders which were quite funny !
set up a campfire in the evening, played guitar & started on the hong thong, hoping that a little nightcap would make the sleeping on concrete floors not a problem ! was such a good idea at the time as we slept like logs, but in the morning we realised it still didnt solve the cardboard back problem & now we had to start trekking with a hangover ! boo.
we were supposed to be trekking to some nature reserve on the 3rd day but we ended up just walking down this dirt track for about 2 hours, had lunch, & then walked back ! a bit dissapointing, especially as at this point my heels were destroyed with blisters, but was with the twin house 10 & the chat was good so still had a wicked time !
headed back into suphanburi to stay with a hill tribe the next day, had my first wash in 4 days ! wheey. it was also grant's birthday so we had a bit of a rave by the river to celebrate ! & got prepared to move on to koh samet...
(to be continued) :)
