happy birthday sarah ! sorry i cant call but i think its actually more impossible here (singburi) than on the island !
so ive given up with the maaysia blogs because i was just tooo behind, ill maybe fill them in later. Now i am in singburi, which is a really rural area about an hour away from Bangkok. in a small internet cafe where all the keys on the keyboard are in thai ! quite funny. Also there is a big procession thing going on outside the window with a load of kids just banging drums & symbols ! so i can hardly hear myself think !
arrived last friday in Bangkok & spent a couple days there, kaoh sang road was mental, but just absolutely packed with western backpackers ! quite nice though as i had arrived by myself & not met the rest of the group yet, so i had lots of people to talk to ! didnt have enough time to do some serious shopping there, so thinking of travelling back there a day early before i fly home, see how money goes.
The group for this project is absolutely huge ! there are 3 houses & about 30 of us staying in each house, i got such a shock when i met everyone in the hotel as i was expecting about 30 in total for all 3 houses ! went on a boat trip along bangkok river with everyone where we went to an orchid farm & a market. it was interesting but a bit of a rip off as they were getting 500 Bt from each of us !
To say we have visited a lot of temples would be an understatement ! we've been to like 2 a day since we got here ! its getting a bit too much, especially as last night we stayed overnight in one. Saying that, it was more a community centre than a temple & there were only about 2 monks, which talked to us for only a few hours in thai. we then had to sleep not in the temple, but in a building next to it on marble floors with cockroaches, because we were girls & couldnt be near the boys, who slept in the temple. So was a little dissapointing.
Last weekend though me & louise took a trip down to kanchanaburi, just to get away for a bit & it was really amazing ! we spend about 7 hours trying to get there on 3 different buses, which cost us a total of 2 pounds ! We stayed in a hostel called the jolly frog, which lonely planet said was quite dirty, but only cost about a pound a night so we thought why not ! Turns out is wasnt dirty at all & it had really nice gardens that overlooked the river ! plus it was on a busy packpackers street with loads of bars, score ! We took a bus to the erawan waterfall the next day, a 7 tier waterfall in the jungle. (its also supposed to be the one they have to jump into in 'the beach') It took us like 2 hours to get to the top but it was sooo worth it ! was really amazing as the water was so cold, but they had little fish in all the pools which bit you ankles ! definately reccomend going there, especially as it was only 200Bt to get in ! (about 3 pounds) spent the day there & were so exhausted when we left, we slept the whole way on the bus !
went to ayutthaya (sp?) last week which is the old capital of thailand, where we saw lots of elephants ! some of the group went riding on them, but it was a little expensive so i just stayed & took pictures ! We then went to an elephant sanctuary where there were loads of baby elephants running around into us ! they were so cute ! & the hair on their heads is really spikey ! they were really clever though & were doing stuff like picking up sticks with their trunks & scratching themselves with them ! they also fight a lot & use their trunks to lock on to each other !
Went to another town which is actually taken over by monkeys ! They were absolutely everywhere & loads of the group stayed on the truck due to fear of getting rabies ! But the monkeys were really funny chasing each other & pushing each other off trees into this pool of water. Had to leave our bags on the bus though & we saw why when a few other tourist had monkeys go into their bags & stole stuff from it !
We have a make-shift bar in our ecohouse, where we go most nights, but a few nights then things have been organised for us. On the first week we went out on this floating restauraunt boat along the river which had kareoke on it ! All the thai people got so into it & one of our co-ordinators, who is so gay its hilarious, started dancing up & down the boat ! another night we had a BBQ planned, but it wasnt the traditional western bbq we were expecting, but instead you got a plate of raw chicken & veg which you had to cook yourself on the mini BBQ in the middle of your table ! we had a bet as to who would be the first one to get food poisoning the next day, but actually everyone was alright !
excited about the trek next week, although i think its going to be really hard as its just sooo humid ! worse than india ! I think the plan will be to go straight from trekking to the beach week though, so only have a few more days left in singburi until i come back for the orphanage work.
still cant believe max died in hollyoaks !! it was the worst news ever ! going to have so much catching up to do when i get back home ! only just over 6 weeks now till im back! scaary. hope you are all ok & sorry i am so rubbish at this updating thing !
