The end of another week and I just can't believe how quickly the time is passing! I only have 11 weeks left of teaching, and then a month's free travel! Insane.
So, you're probably wondering why I have a picture of camels for this week's image...Basically, we went on a class trip on Thursday with the Year Two kids from New Life Academy to the Masai Cultural Museum and along other things there were camels. So we all had a go, and it was so much fun! My camel ride was particularly interesting as I went with one of the Year Two teachers, Flora, a fairly old and highly religious woman who decided about 30 seconds into the ride that she was deathly afraid of camels. This led to most of the short trip being punctuated with Flora crying hysterically behind me and shouting 'I HAVE AFRAID OF THE CAMEL!'. I tried to calmly explain to her that she'd be fine, given that God made camels (she REALLY loves God) but it was in vain. Still, I've got some classic photos of me on the camel with Flora's face buried in my back....
This week has been far more eventful than last. The big drama of the week was undoubtedly when a teacher from New Life (we still don't know who) rang Immigration and said that 4 Europeans (me and my housemates) and 1 Kenyan (our lovely headmaster, Edward Mollelo) were working in Tanzania illegally. Cue scary Immigration agents descending on the school and taking Edward into custody for ''interrogation''. He was gone for nearly a whole day, and when he finally returned he was incredibly shaken. We still don't know the full story of what happened to him. Thank God, neither me nore my housemates were at school when the agents came, we were teaching at the Government school. The whole thing has been ridiculous, given that we have our exemption certificates and can legally work here, and Edward has lived in Tanzania legally for 11 years! Our AV rep, Helena, is still trying to work out what happened, and actually offered to move us from New Life but we absolutely refused, we're home there now. We have quite a few very good friends in the staff room, but clearly one disgruntled person decided to cause trouble.
This whole drama happened at the very end of the week, but to be honest it's been a great time as usual. We'll still have to see how the rest of this issue plays out, but I think things will be ok. This weekend is a joint birthday party for two of the volunteers here so I'm off to the market in a moment to buy sheets (it's a toga party) but hopefully I'll be doing something a bit more adventurous in the next few weekends. Plans so far include a hike up an active volcano, a hot-air balloon safari over the serengeti and so on...So you'll all have something more exciting to read about soon!
Lots of love to everyone,
Talk to you next week!
