I've just got in from taking a night walk in the snow, around the town of Cumberland. The lights are all on for Christmas and everything looks magical at the moment. The snow started falling on Friday and stopped today, so we have had quite a layering. Unlike in Portsmouth, it was still there when I woke up this morning and it will STILL be there tomorrow when I wake up. It came late this year, so the season is due to start this Friday, instead of 2 weeks ago. I haven't had a problem with this, it has given us the time to start bonding with our new work mates and socializing without having to get up at the crack of dawn to go to work. 8 weeks of no work- I'm never going to complain at that, all the time I have money!
I went on my walk alone. The first time I think I've really been alone for about 3 weeks, since I arrived back at the hostel! I didn't realize until I was outside in the silence, just how much socializing I have done and how tiring meeting tonnes of new people can be. So I enjoyed my walk and finally felt inspired to sit down and write a blog entry! As you can see, it has been a while.
Since the last time I wrote I have been exploring the local islands, shopping, learning to knit (yes you did read that right), drinking beer, drinking vodka and kalua. We had our staff party, which was a meet and greet affair, where I did indeed meet a lot of new people. I have seen them since and we all seem to be very like-minded and chilled out (probably because we have all been out of work for so long!). Although I have felt a little out of my depth as the group I have been hanging out with are all instructors and can talk the lingo and do crazy stunts. My 3 weeks of skiing is looking a little bit inadequate. But the good thing is that they can all teach me how to improve! Everything has a silver lining aye…
There are a great bunch of people staying at the hostel, 2 English gals (me and Katie), 2 aussie boys, a Canadian girl (Val) and a German girl. It's nice to have a mix of people and find out about their Countries. Especially when it comes to Christmas!
I got all Christmassy the other day and decorated my bed with lights and a homemade snowflake. I had the Christmas tunes blasting and finally heard our classics. Christmas music is different over here, they have the traditional carols and that is it. I hadn't heard 'Fairytale of New York' or 'Do they know its Christmas?' at all, so I educated Sophie and Val with our normal Christmas songs! Now all I need to do is find a mince pie to eat and I will be esatic. They don't have them either! But tomorrow I am going to visit the 'British Pie Shop' in town and woe be tide them if they don't have any mince pies!!! War will break out.
Other than that I love Christmas over here! The snow has helped immensely and it looks like we are really in for a white Christmas, not just on the mountain but in the town as well. Its magical. I wouldn't swap it for anything (not even a mince pie).
Well its short and sweet but we've got a movie to watch, so Merry Christmas everyone!!! I hope you all have a great one, I will write again in a few weeks.
