Hi All,
Hope you are all well. Just a note about the photos, we have about 400 but just can't get them on due to the crappy speed of the internet here. We'll sort them as soon as we hit New Zealand in a couple of weeks.
Well, we arrived in Cuzco on the worst possible day. In Cuzco on the 24th June they hold an Inca festival called Inti Raymi which is the equivalent on Christmas Eve, Thanks Giving ... etc. AS you can imagine as we didn't have a hostel booked it turned out pretty hard to find one (plus there was 4 of us)! After a few let downs we found a really pretty little guest house for quite cheap set around an ivoy filled court yard. It was just outside the town centre so was ideal. The pair of us and Craig and Jo (the Irish guys), decided to hit town and look for some food as we were starving after the 9 hour bus ride from La Paz. It was night but we only had to walk about 3 minutes before we were ushered into a mexican place which suited us down to the ground. The food was slightly more expensive than we were used to but stilll cheap. After dinner we went for a walk around the town and was quite shocked to discover how nice the place was. The main area is around a square which has a fountain in the middle and is surrounded by shops, restuarants, cafes, churches and cathedrals all lite up by a golden yellow light. Really beautiful looking. We hit an Irish bar called Paddys before we retired to our comfy double bed with open beams in the ceiling (the room was cheaper than if we stayed in a crappy 10 person dorm filled with idiots)! In the day we went straight to the square again to have breakfast (most hostels in Peru don't provide it) and ended up on a balcony in the warm sunshine overlooking the square eating a continental brekkie. Sheer bliss!
The rest of out time in Cuzco has consisted of having 1/2 a tooth pulled out due to some dodgy Bolivian dental work, telling people 'no gracias'every 5 minutes as they try to sell you post cards, Peruvian hats, inca dolls, dinner, tours and finger puppets! Oh and cocaine, lots of cocaine. Sometimes they will just hold up a bottle of coca cola and point to 'coke'. When you tell them that 'coke aint our bag baby' they then try to get you to come in their restuarants! Crazy but the food is cheap and nice so who's to say no. We even have withdrawal symptoms if we don't go back to the same deals one ... funny that! There is the Cultural side of Cuzco which has been enough to keep us going for 5 days and we still haven't seen it all. There are massive inca ruins outside the city (which we rode horses to), and copious amounts of churches (most with solid gold/silver altars) and museums and cinema bars were you go in and buy a drinks at a slightly inflated price and you then go into a room with a massive screen and choose a dvd from 100's! You can also get pizza, beers, ice cream etc whilsts you watch your film! Heavenly!
We now have one day to go before we do the famous Inca Trail (a 4 day hike to the inca mountain city of Machu Picchu). This is what we came to South America for so are so excited. As soon as we get back we will have our aching bodies massaged and then jump straight back on the blog to tell you all about it.
All our love, Rob & Lee xxxxxx
