We slept, off and on, for about 12 hours. I woke up about 7pm last night and walked back to the airport and purchased some rolls and drink for dinner. Then back to sleep. We certainly needed the sleep.
Breakfast this morning in the hotel was a wonderful buffet.
Checked out and the 5 minute walk to the airport to check in. Quite cold. Completely self check in for our Scandinavian Airlines flight to Tromso - 2 hours. Very rough flying at times. Absolutely magnificent scenery, snowy mountains, beautiful waterways, high peaks - all as though you could just reach out and touch them as we were on approach - weather overcast and 1 degree temperature.
Snow all over the airfield. We joined the other passengers in getting our warm clothing on.
Caught the Sky Bus to the city - 55,000 people spread out over adjoining islands. Long road tunnels with many roads joining underground via roundabouts - in the tunnels!
Checked into the Amalie Hotel in the city centre, 5 minutes walk to the Hurtigruten ship terminal. Went for a walk then returned because we didn't have enough warm clothes on! Very cold, windy and it was beginning to snow. Continued to snow more heavily. We saw today's ship arrive - we will be boarding tomorrow's at about 3pm. Saw our first polar bear - a man dressed up in a suit welcoming the passengers!
Went and had some lunch- still snowing heavily - and very cold. We have had a practice run today with our warm clothing and we both agreed that an extra layer was required.
We're going to have the buffet nearby, tonight for dinner.
We hope to go on a cable car to the mountain top tomorrow overlooking the city if the weather is better.
Good evening from Tromso.
