We have had a simply marvelous day today snowmobiling.
The weather was perfect, the scenery awe inspiring and the riding was fast and furious.
We were in a group of 11 this time with 2 guides and the destination was the Von Post "ship in the ice" at the bottom of the Templeford Glacier. It was still cold even with the right gear but as we were having so much fun it was barely noticeable. We stopped a few times to look at the scenery, with the sun shining through the mid-level cloud. We rode along frozen tundra with grazing reindeer, over frozen rivers, between high snow capped valleys and through plenty of snow drifts.
We had lunch in a sheltered valley. This was packaged meals which you add boiling water to, biscuits and hot drinks. Then it was on to one the trappers huts built in 1912, and only open for 2 days of the year - and we were here for it. We have now made it to the water which opens up the fjord and leads further up towards the glacier. In the distance is the Von Post - stuck in the ice as a tourist attraction in this wilderness area. Unfortunately the sea has not frozen as much this year and we can't reach the boat. Our guides take us on our snowmobiles to the top of a mountain for a magnificent view of the ocean, glaciers and surrounding snow covered mountains and valleys. It was bitterly cold - minus 10 and although only about a 10 kph wind it gave a wind chill of minus 19 degrees. As we were taking photos and had to remove our gloves, our fingers became painfully cold. So it was a quick photo shoot and gloves back on. A marvelous sight and experience.
Sadly we were on our way back with only 2 stops - more reindeer and beautiful photo opportunities. It was all over too quickly.
