Mount Eden, over 35 mens Fiji football, The Viaduct Harbour area and the Aquariam. Auckland so far..
Auckland, New Zealand
I've been in Auckland for 10 days now and having a great time. Must admit, the weather hasn't been the best but you put up with it and do what you can, plus it reminds me of the good ole English weather so at least I have something to remind me of home lol
The day after I arrived it was my brother in law's birthday so the day was spent having some beers in the sun, I was surprised to find the sun so strong and could feel my arms starting to cook after a short while so I moved into the shade!! we then went to a local bar and watched a rugby league game there, rugby league is as popular here as football is back home. After having some more beers we headed home.
As soon as the weekend was over the weather took a turn for the worse and stayed like that for near enough the whole week. I did manage a trip to the top of Mount Eden though and discovered amazing views of Auckland, even on a grey day the views were still breathtaking. I could see another mountain called 'One Tree Hill' or as its now known.......'No Tree Hill'!! this was because a few years ago a local Maori guy decided to take his chainsaw to the 'one tree' on that hill which turned out to be one of the oldest trees in New Zealand in protest against how he felt his people were being treated, sad really but he had a point to make I guess. I hope I manage to get back up Mount Eden when the sun returns so I can get some awesome pictures......
I met up with an old school/college friend, we haven't seen each other for about 18 years but we recognised each other straight away so we both decided we haven't aged at all since we last saw each other, I wasn't going to argue with that anyway lol. We met up in the 'Viaduct Harbour' area of Auckland which is full of bars and restaurants, I highly recommend visiting here as all the places are pretty cool and its full of cool friendly people. It is a bit on the expensive side for drinks but if you tie your visit in with the various happy hours then it works out fine
I'm now staying with another cousin for this week, yesterday I was invited to watch a local over 35's Fijian mens football team practice. For a bunch of guys where the average age is 45-50 they're all in good shape and played some impressive football, I was gutted I didnt have any footy boots as I would've liked to have joined in. The funny part was after practice had finished, this was when one of the guys heads to a local off licence and buys a case of beer for everyone to drink, beats orange juice I can tell ya haha we all sat down, drunk the beer and discussed English football. Most of these guys were Manchester United supporters, I had to point out to them that approx 80% of Man Utd supporters dont live in England and approx 90% of Man Utd supporters have never been to Old Trafford which they found surprising but at the same time amusing lol.
Today I visited the Auckland Aquariam which was brilliant. They had a big penguin section which I found really cool, LITERALLY!! they had this thing where you could put your hands in water that is the same temperature as what the Penguins swim in, it's no wonder Penguins have blubber for insulation!! after holding my hands in the water for 20 seconds they went numb and I had to pull them out otherwise I think my hands would have frozen off haha. I also saw a Stingray feeding session which was amazing to see, they truly are majestic animals. I do recommend visiting the Aquarium, I'm sure you'll enjoy it
I have plans to visit Rotarua this weekend to see some volcanic action, CANT WAIT!!
Until next time peeps
Much love
Rob
