Another rainy day greets us. Seems like rain and Onsen goes hand in hand on our trip!
It was just a short ride to Beppu on JR and we were there before we know it. We went to the information counter to get the 1 day bus pass and check which bus to take to the Onsen.
In the end, we, or rather, I decided on going to Hoyoland to experience our first mudbath onsen! I was rather looking forward to this ever since I found out about this place, so wanna put mud all over myself! So off we went on the bus to Hoyoland~
By the way, dear was already expecting that no towels will be provided and so smartly brought along the towels we bought/kop from Kurokawa! Well done! After we checked into the onsen, we split up into our respective changing rooms.
This one is rather straightforward, go in, take off all your clothes and go into the water. The changing area and the inner pool are almost not separated at all. I spent a couple of minutes in the inner pool to warm myself up first before heading out to the sheltered mud pool. This was my first taste of mud onsen! Wooohoooo. Saw fellow Onseners digging mud up from the ground and spreading all over themselves, so fun!
After about 5-10mins, I decided to venture out to the outdoor onsen in case dear was already out there waiting for me. It was cooooold and so I hurried along the narrow pathways that leads to the outside. It was a mixed outdoor onsen but "not really" mixed as there are wooden demarcations to segregate the sexes. Dear wasn't out yet and so I quietly dipped myself at a corner. Some couples/friends were at the wooden borders interacting while others stayed within their own confines. There was light drizzling which made the onsen feel really comfy.
Dear came out shortly and we closed in on the border to meet up. I didn't really scrutinize the mud until dear showed me what she found and it was pretty disgusting! Armpit and Pubic hairs were trapped all over in the mud lor! Dear was like so disgusted..so cute! But nevertheless, I tried to filter out these stuffs and spread the mud all over myself. Dear gladly helped me out and was having fun doing it. hahaha.
We stayed there for roughly half an hour before we decided to move on. We went in and cleaned up ourselves and set off for the next destination.
We decided to visit the legendary hells which is supposed to be the highlight of Beppu. The Hells are hot springs but too hot for human to go into. There were 8 of them and we went to Chi no Ike Jigoku which roughly translates into Blood Pond Hell. I believe it got its name from the red misty appearance of the spring. We cam-w****d for a while there and then checked out the store there. Saw this interesting nude towel where the lady in the towel will turn naked when its dipped into hot water. How cool is that!
We then headed back to the station and tried to look for the "famous" Beppu ramen. Walked up and down but couldn't find any as many shops were closed for year end holidays. Went back to the station's info counter to ask for recommendations. In the end we ended up at a ramen stall, not too bad but not fantastic either. I made sure dear says that we had the "best ramen" every in Beppu if she was asked! hahahaha!
After dinner we went back to Oita for some last minute shopping.
