3 months in! Where has the time gone?
I never thought the year would fly by so quickly especially at the start. Last night our desk officer Jen (from Scotland) came to our project to see how we're getting on. When she arrived we gave her a tour of the house, had a catch up then Georgia and I started to make dinner. We cooked her homemade chapatis and guacamole with a runner bean, sweet potatoe and kidney bean curry thing with rice. She said it was the best meal that volunteers had made her so far!
The past few weeks of teaching have varied for us, once the student teachers left we arranged a timetable with the headmaster Kenneth so that we could arrange what lessons we would teach to which classes. Once we came to the agreements we started teaching maths and english to P4 & P5. Due to our school being fully staffed we were unable to have a full class to ourselves. Therefore, we take 10 pupils out at a time into the library which is basically a big classroom with a chalk board. Teaching the older pupils is fun but at times a challenge. We now have 2 months off and return back to school in February, our travels begin this weekend with Kampala the capital city and Jinja - the source of the Nile where we're heading for some training from Project Trust.
Two weeks ago we travelled to Kampala on an 8 hour bus journey to celebrate Verity's 19th birthday. Overall the weekend was a lovely break from the village as we experienced several home comforts. On the Friday night we went out to 2 bars - Casablanca and bubbles. There ended up being 14 of us volunteers so as you can imagine we had a nice catch up. The following day we paid a trip to Garden City shopping centre in central Kampala. The best way to explain it is like stepping into a soap bubble. Not at any point did it feel like we were in Uganda. It was like any ordinary english shopping centre and it was full of musungus and wealthy Ugandans. In the evening to continue Verity's celebrations we headed out to a posh italian restuarant. And it was there and then that I was reunited with lettuce as I had a chicken ceaser salad. If only you could understnd what it felt like... DELICIOUS! When I get home to all the nice food in England I'm probably going to be the size of a house!
