We are now in Viet nam (locals have it as 2 words) Ho Chi Minh/Saigon at the moment. It's a great city, very international and not at all communist.
Since our last blog we've went down to the cambodian coast to a place called Sihanoukville. This place has potential but unfortunately its not being used and we were disappointed with it...in fact its rubbish. However, we decided to go out to one of the local island to see if that was any better...it was.
We ended up on a an island called Koh Rung which has only one place to stay on it called Lazy Beach, run by 2 english guys (Chris and Rich) from Streatham! Its a great place and i highly recommend it. We planned to stay there a couple of nights..this turned into 5 and we learned to play poker as well, so it wasn't a total lost cause. Rob actually won some money; although only enough to recoup the losses. Like to thank Tom Sisterson for this part of our trip...he'd have appreciated the bone idleness of the place.
From here we travelled back to Phnom Penh and then onto a place in the north called Ratanakiri. Its the jungle part of the country and it was lovely. We visited a crater lake with crystal blue waters and a few amazingly beautiful waterfalls all surrounded by jungle..in fact we've never seen such greenery...well worth the 12hour arse-breaking journey it took to get up there! We stayed in a swedish owned/cambodian run hotel that did the best Amok curry we have ever tasted...by far the best food we've had...i'm still drooling.
We headed back to Phnom Penh for a few days sight seeing. The Killing fields and the S-21 museum were high on our agenda and they didn't disappoint. Clothes rags/teeth and bone were all visable in the undisturbed graves. A Stupa has been erected to keep all the 9000 skulls that have so far been excavated. It's soul touching stuff. It highlights the barbarity of the regime and the stupidity of the people at all levels. We have both read out here the book by Haing Ngor the guy who played Dith Pran in the film The Killing Fields. Its far better than the film he was in and his story is far more interesting the Dith Prna's...we just don't understand how this could happen. S-21, the interrogation prison museum, was even worse.................Anyway afterwards we went to some bars and got rat faced so its all better now!
Phnom Penh is a great city and i preferred it to Bangkok.
From there we went to Ho Chi Minh. Its what Phnom Penh should be and deserves to be. We've already been to some great bars and restuarant already. We've also been to the vietnam war museum...or the 'American Genocide Museum' depending on your point of view!
We'll be here a day more, heading to the viet cong tunnels and then the Mekong delta before heading up the country towards Hanoi.
Hope everyone is cool and we'll be in touch soon
