Que Tal!!
And so we headed for lake Atitlan, first stop the hedonistic lands of San Pedro, where traditional garments include: unwashed dreadlocks, rainbow coloured fisherman trousers, and Hula Hoops. After meeting up with some fellow postgraduates we hit the famous nightlife. This entailed lying horizontally in a bar, until being rudely awakened by a 50 year old sporting a pony tail playing the latest in eurphoric trance........Av it!
Early next moring we all got in touch with our hunter gatherer roots and went spear fishing. After an in depth safety briefing "dont shoot each other" we headed out in to the deep. Unfortunatley someone had tipped off the fish and we can only presume they were still out trance raving, eating magic cookies with some vegan hippies.
Next stop, Santa Cruz just across the lake. The next few days were made up of stunning scenery, kayaking, snorkeling, rum n ginger ale, family style dinners, cross dressing (rob pretty in pink), and plenty of hammock time. We were also lucky enough to witness the annual village fete. This consisted of all the local men drinking until they fell over, then dancing to the marimba with bloody faces, enough to make you home sick.
After some retail therapy in Panajachel we headed to Lago Izabel, aboard what can only be described as a 4 wheeled oven. We then roughed it with the Yachties at "tortugal" on the lake. On our tight budget we could only afford the dormitories. These were absolutley beautiful with white princess style beds on the top floor of a palm top veranda over looking the lake. Morning wake up calls consisted of diving straight off the pier into the lake. We visited Finca Paradiso which was a short hike through farmland to a hot waterfall with pools. A local insisted on taking us caving behind the falls to steaming saunas while our feet were cleaned by hungry fish.
Then after a boat ride up the river dulce, accompanied by over excited school kids, we landed in the Garifuna town of Livingston. Where we stayed in a cuban style house, with massive verandahs overlooking the "hustle" an bustle of the main strip below. We were taken on cultural garifuna tour by our freindly tour guide/musician/hustler who showed us the local side of town. Although we enjoyed livingston we were forced to stay their 3 days longer then planned due to Robs troublesome belly, and Lou Lou´s belly soon joined in in sympathy. But enough was enough and with clenched cheeks we headed off for Honduras
Hope all is well back home, feel free to use the message board with any news, (and to prove anyone reads this thing)
Lots of love Rob n Lou
