Really enjoying exploring this strange city .... It is a total mix of old & new, traditional & modern..... & no divide between the two!
The architecture is towering, concrete & dare I say grim looking....of course there are a few exceptions but not many!
The people here are wonderful, happy, friendly & helpful oh & did I mention there's lots of them ....7.1 million all crammed into those towering concrete blocks in 426sq mtrs!
Our 1st day ...Thursday 23 2 12
After arriving early evening we settled into our hotel & then took to pounding the pavements in search of food, slightly distracted by the pull of the bright lights of designer shops! However hunger & tiredness directed our senses & we found ourselves by the harbour & feasting on pizza ... Ok I know it's not very authentic but jet lag was setting in!
Friday 24 2 12
We armed ourselves with map, camera & good, comfy trainers to begin our sightseeing. Our first stop was over to The Wong Tai Sin Temple (most famous temple in Hong Kong). The first thing that hits you is the smell of incense burning.... An army of Chinese people are gathered planting burning incense in front of the beautiful ornate alters... The next thing is the rattling of sticks ..... This I felt compelled to join in with ..... Shake a bamboo container holding ... I'm guessing....100 bamboo sticks... Until one drops out.... Note the number written on the stick & then select one of the many fortune tellers who will interpret the meaning! From here we headed to Mong Kok where we strolled through the flower market, aquarium fish market & finally the bird garden....bizarrely people proudly display their singing birds in ornate cages! Our afternoon was completed by braving the subway.... This was quick, easy & incredibly cheap.....much to David's delight!
Our Evening
Never to be forgotten ... An old colleague of David's recommended a "locals" restaurant......so we found our selves in Kowloon in a bustling, brightly lit, noisy, canteen sort of style restaurant..... Thankfully the menu had english interpretations ...."Pigs lung soup"...." Chicken feet in sauce"....."marinated pig intestinal"...... Ok we weren't that brave or mad .... We choose crispy chicken & king prawns & it was delicious!
