After filling our bags with food for the journey, at the breakfast buffet (typical English!), we began our long day on the road; leaving from Calais and heading south east towards Germany.
Considering it was Good Friday we enjoyed empty roads for the entire journey, with views of lush green fields. With Holly and Laura in charge of getting through the tolls successfully in the 'Scuzzi Scuzzi' car, we sailed through the long journey without any hiccups! The 'Winetaster' car had a small hold up, however, when Mum tried to pay the toll fee with Turkish Euros! (?!); the toll attendant passed the money back, and she just tried again, insisting her '2 Euros' were good!
Shortly after crossing the border, over the Rhine, we soon arrived at our hotel. Hotel Rebenhof was tucked away in the hills, just outside of Baden-Baden, situated amongst the vineyards. We arrived to a very peaceful, sun soaked bar terrace and wasted no time in tasting the local wine...and after a fair few carafes we all decided it was pretty good stuff; even Rose tried her hardest to get a little taste, little did she know that Mummy doesn't share wine!
That evening we sampled the German cuisine, trying Wiener Schnitzel, Boiled Beef, Sauerkraut and Spatzle. The portions would give the Americans a serious run for their money so we didn't manage to try the famous Black Forest Gateaux, but based on the food we did try, we were all pleasantly surprised with the German food...so much so, that the next morning the breakfast buffet was annihilated, bags bulging in preparation for another on the road! Laura even tried to eat a beautifully painted egg, bashing it on her plate to crack the shell, but stopping when her travel companions began laughing at her trying to eat an Easter ornament!!
