We decided to do a 3 day trek along the Huruni High Country Track, on Island Hills station. We arrived at about 8pm to an old shearers hut where we were to spend the night, there was a kitchen and one end then lots of bedrooms with twin beds in - perfect, except for the weather! I barely slept a wink as was lying there listening to the wind and torrential rain, hoping that it would stop in time for us to set off in the morning!
Thankfully the rain did stop and we packed up our daypacks with lunch and plasters and set off on our 'tramp'. The first days trail is 15km and we hiked through cattle fields, forests where they'd been logging, up very steep paths and along very pretty rivers. We reached the summit of the mountian and had lunch on a picnic bench, very quickly as it was windy and cold! You get so cold when you stop as the sweat on your back from the daypack goes cold so quickly!
We arrived at our overnight camp at about 3pm and had some snacks and a really nice shower which ws in a little shed outside. The views are absolutely stunning - rolling hills and big mountains in very direction. There were two other people doing the trek the same time as us, we'd spoken to them a bit the night before but after this evening it was confirmed, they are the most boring people ever! I came back in from my shower to find them listening to bird noises on an ipad and trying to guess which bird made each noise...yawn!! The owners of the trek had left us a bottle of bubbly in the fridge and transported our big rucksacks here for when we arrived. We made bangers and mash, had a few beers and got a good nights sleep in.
You have the choice of whether to do the trek in 2 or 3 days and we simply couldn't face another night with the boring oldies, so we got up in good time, said our goodbyes and headed out with about 16km to do today. The weather was beautiful, as was the scenery. Mostly walked alongisde the river and through ferns and tall grass. We reached the hut where you spend the 2nd night at midday so had a look around and ate our lunch there, could so easily have fallen asleep! But, knowing we still had about 3 hours wlaking to do we forced our blistered feet into our books, dragged our daypacks onto our backs and got our aching legs pumping again!
It was so worth doing, and we certainly felt a big sense of achievement and rewarded ourselves with a double scoop ice cream on the way back to Josie's dads house, where her step mum had a roast in the oven for us!
