There is a hill that is in the centre of Edinburgh called Arthur's Seat - a dormant volcano, 254 metres above sea level. And we decided to walk up it today.
It started off quite pleasantly - a gentle hill climb, but that didn't last long. We were then faced with a pretty steep climb for about 80% of the entire climb. But we all took that in our stride even breaking into a bit of sweat as we climbed up. Problem was the closer we got to the top the colder and stronger the wind got, almost sweeping us off our feet at times. It was a bit of a tease, a couple of places where we thought we had arrived only to discover there was more above us. But it was worth the effort to keep going.
Sweeping views of Edinburgh.
We made our way down a different route and visited the the ruins of St Anthony's Chapel on the way down.
At the end of desent we decided to take the opportunity of visiting the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the abbey.
The Palace was the home of Mary Queen of Scots for a period of time and her story is quite a sad one. We were able to visit her private rooms as well as the State Apartments. All very impressive though in some ways quite simplistic - I would have thought they would be more ornate in furnishings particularly.
The abbey ruins beside the palace were an interesting place to spend some time - lots of old head stones and interesting architecture.
