Today was spent with some very special people who showed us a London that we would never have seen.
We met Roger and Sue at Westminster station - delivered Rachel's Christmas presents (phew) - and then set off for Greenwich. It was a loveky, but cold again, boat ride on the Thames. The captain of the boat gave us s running commentary on historical facts about the buildings beside the river, mostly that they were warehouses but now 'luxury apartments'.
As we were travelling we saw The Globe, the Mayflower hotel, the Shard, Cheesegrater, Walkie-talkie, The Tower Bridge (from under it) as well as other interesting sites.
We arrived at Greenwich, checked out the Cuttysark - the fastest clipper of its time - and then walked up to the Observatory. After admiring the view for a while we took a leisurely walk back down to the pier via the gates of thd Observatory where we saw Blackheath Cathedral. We found the squirrels very entertaining (sorry Sue) and saw starlings, rooks, blackbirds and dogs chasing the squirrels.
Back at the pier we walked through Greenwich village and checked out the markets.
Back on the boat back to Westminster.
I wanted to go to The Globe just so I could say I had been there, so back down the river we went. Back over the Millenium Bridge and into the city where we visited a lot of places. St Paul's Cathedral, the Legal Precinct (fascinating area - been the area for barristers for hundreds of years, and there are a lot of rooms and buildings there. They have their own cathedrals - not open to the public - and they employ their own chaplains. Not that it necessarily makes them a more spiritual bunch).
We walked past the only remaining Renaissance frontage - Staple Inn - very beautiful. And then on to Covent Garden - it was literally heaving with activity.
We wandered awhile befird eating sharing dinner and being joined by David.
It was a great day and I am very thankful for the generosity of Roger and Sue.
