8/1/2021 Bowling Green, KY to Charlotte, NC: And Back Again.
Well, what do you know, dear readers….surprise of all surprises, we came back to our old house today! I guess after checking out all those other ones my humans decided to come back to this one. That's good. I like this one. It was a long day of driving. It must have been about 98 hours in the car. We left the nice town that Snack Guy was born in. But they did take me back to that dog park first thing in the morning. Oh, boy I ran like crazy, made some new friends, then ran some more. I was so tired when we left that my humans almost had to carry me out. But I think that was their plan because they must have known it was going to take 98 hours to get back home. We stopped a few times to get out and sniff and stretch our legs, and the drive was uneventful, thankfully. It was nice to be back in the eastern woodlands again, to see green trees and full rivers, the rolling Appalachian Mountains, even the kudzu covering most of Tennessee was a sight we'd missed. Indeed, we crossed back into Tennessee, then after some time we were back in North Carolina. The views were a welcome change, but sadly, it was so hazy, and the sky was so full of smog we really couldn't see all that far off. But we saw enough to know we were getting close to home! I didn't really know where we were, but I could sense the excitement in my humans. Eventually, the city of Charlotte came into view, and after all the other cities we've seen on this trip, it was like a warm welcome home.
Oh, my goodness, when we pulled to a stop in front of the house, I realized something was different. I don't usually get up to inspect the situation until I hear them unclick their safety leashes; that's when I know the stop is a real stop and not just one of the random ones they always do. I'm not sure why. But Snack Guy pulled in, shifted into park, unclicked his safety leash, and said "Estamos aquí!" Something he only says when we are at our actual house. I got so excited I almost peed. I started barking and crying and dancing. My tail almost wagged off my butt. They could hardly get the leash on me before I jumped out of the car. Sure enough, this was our house! I barked and barked, so everyone would know we were back. Got in my back yard, and it was all the same, except some of the flowers and trees had gotten bigger. I ran in and circled the yard from edge to edge a few times, jumping at my humans as I passed them. I sniffed and sniffed, and sure enough, it was our house. What a relief to be home. But I was still nervous when we got in the house. I'd forgotten about the slippery hardwood floors. I had been used to them, but it took me some time to get used to them again, so I was a bit hesitant to walk much in the house. But as they rushed around and brought things in from the not-the-Jeep, I kept exploring to make sure it was all safe. I gave a bark or two now and then to let them know all was well. And it was…all was well with the world as far as I was concerned. There was even a new toy in my yard. I think Archie left it because it still smelled of him. That was nice. I hope he doesn't want it back. It is a yellow ball that I was able to make squeak. I'll make sure to chew it early in the morning to help wake up my humans. They'll love it. They love those squeaky toys. It makes them so happy when I make a lot of noise with them. You should see how they react. Anyhow, it was a long drive, but we made it safe and sound. Well, safe anyhow, we may not be so sound…hahahah. The Jeep still isn't around. They don't seem to be worried about it or talk about it much. I'm not sure what's going on with that.
We've been a long way. I overhead my humans say we covered 6,283 miles, in five weeks. We crossed all of North America! We touched the beach on the Pacific Ocean and made our way back again. We saw mountains, mesas, deserts, lakes, rivers, canyons and boulders, small towns and big cities, Native American reservations, ghost towns, back roads and highways and byways, up tall mountains and down steep valleys, and across distant prairies and endless plains. We learned history, met some great people, had some great food, and had some terrific adventures and some scary moments. We laughed, we cried, we hugged, we argued, and we grew closer, as a team, as a family and as a pack. It was certainly the trip of a lifetime. I mean, I was only 8 months old when we left, and now I'm 10 months old. I'm a completely different puppy than what left so long ago. I've grown. I'm wiser than I was before. I've changed, mostly for the better. I've come into my own. I'm ready for anything now. Mostly, I think we're all ready for a nice long nap in our own beds, and to poop in our own comfortable places. We're a little sad for this all to come to end, but on the other hand, we were really glad to get back home too. I think that maybe one of the most important things I learned. As great, and as beautiful, and as enormous as this country is, I think our little spot of it here in Mint Hill, NC. is the best. Mostly because there is where my pack is. And wherever my pack is, is home. Thanks for reading.
