Loma to Boulder
Oh, wow. Oh wow! Oh, wow, what a night I had two nights ago. So, we were on that farm, and it has horses, real big dog-like things. And Cows, real big and fat dog-like things, then some goats, I don't know what they are really. Does anyone? There were several other things too, like even some hogs. They smelled great but were kind of distant socially. Anyhow, the horses and the cows were all together in the same place, and after playing with the annoying puppy that lived there for a while, I got tired of him and went to introduce myself to the horses and cows. I knew it was gonna be fun as soon as Snack Guy started yelling and telling me to come back. But just then, like happens sometimes, I think the spirit of Athena filled me and I was brave and bold and going to meet those cows and horses. I ducked under the electric fence, and it was on! One horse came running up and sniffed at me, so I lunged and barked at it. It started up all scared and backed away a few steps, and then I knew this was going to be great fun. It was so dusty and dirty there. Those big cows didn't know what to think. Neither did Snack Guy. I heard him calling to me but for some reason, I just couldn't make myself stop and come back. I was free and off-leash, the smells were incredible. I was weaving and dodging the cows and horses as they tried to catch me, but I was fast as a tumbleweed. I switched and weaved and dodged….it was really driving the cows crazy especially. I was chasing them all over field. I was filled with such excitement I started barking and barking, and Snack Guy was yelling and yelling, then Food Lady came out and yelled and the whole farm was really having a blast. It was such fun. Then I saw the mud pit. I was in it in a flash, then out, then back in, then chasing the cows, then running behind the horse, then back in the mud pit with the pigs, then out and then back to the cows who started mooing and bucking…then the horses ran away. I was filthy. I'm not sure I've ever been happier in my life. OH, I almost forgot! I told you before about cow pies, but did you know that horses poop snacks too? When I wasn't dodging and weaving, I was snacking on the virtual buffet they left on the field. My thinking is that maybe, just maybe, if you eat horse poop, you might just grow up to be as big as horse. I'll let you know how it all works out. Anyhow, Food Lady and Snack Guy were trying to get me to return, but I pretty much figured I'd be in huge trouble, so I was in no hurry to come back no matter how much they bribed me with snacks. Besides, I had all the snacks I could ever want. Horses are awesome!
All this went on for some time. It was really great fun. Then I saw that the not-a-Jeep was driving off. I was really worried they'd decided to leave and had forgot me, so I ran up to it and Food Lady got out and scooped me up. She took me back to the house and threw me in the shower. I think she was pretty freaked out by the whole scene. I kind of started to feel bad when I saw how much it upset her. Both my humans were pretty angry with me after that. They didn't have much to say and it was real quiet that night.
Next morning however it was all forgot. We got up, had a good breakfast, then it was off adventuring. We found a trail nearby and had a nice walk. It was pretty high up, so I got tired kind of fast, but it was fun sniffing around at all the new stuff. Snack Guy said that this trail was famous because it was where someone named Elmer Riggs dug up a mostly complete Brontosaurus for the first time. I'm not sure I understood all of what he was describing to us, but it was a good hike, and from what I could gather, a Brontosaurs is kind of like a really, really big horse, and I couldn't help but think what amazing snacks it must have made.
Like I said I was tried after the hike, and they put me in the not-a-Jeep and went out for a long ride through the mountains. Snack Guy said something about driving through the Colorado National Monument; he went on and on about canyons and the Colorado River being the hardest working river the whole world, and how this was the tallest flat-topped mountain in the world, but all I saw was a bunch of red rocks and some crazy tall views. Honestly, I slept through most of it. When he goes on and on like that, it kind of makes me sleepy.
We went back to the farm after that, but I wasn't let off-leash again for the rest of our stay there (kind of a bummer, but totally worth it). We rested then when it cooled off, we were at it again. Back in the not-a-Jeep and this time we wound up at a lake. We took a long walk around the lake and then Snack Guy encouraged me to get in the lake. So, I did. I saw another dog there going way out. His human would throw a toy and that dog would kind wiggle through the water and get it and bring it back. I wanted to do that. So, Snack Guy found a good stick and threw it in the water a little way and told me to go get it. I did…but the water got really deep all the sudden…I started to get scared. I looked back at Snack Guy and he said again to go get it. Then, I think Athena must have filled me with bravery and wisdom again, because next thing I knew, my feet were kind of running under the water but not touching anything; I was wiggling like that other dog….I was moving toward the stick…I got it in my mouth with some effort, turned around and wiggled back to my Humans, who were cheering and laughing. I didn't know what was going on really, but they said I had swimmed. Snack Guy said "swum" is the correct word but that sounds weird. I was very proud of myself. I wanted to keep doing it forever. After a few more tries it got less and less awkward, and I got to be a pretty good swimmer if I do say so myself.
After all that, we were all well and good tired. We went home and slept great. And this morning, we got up, loaded the not-a-Jeep, and were off again. I'm not sure where we're headed. I never am, really, but there's always something new around the corner.
I'll keep you posted,
Risa
