7/11/2021 Rio Rancho NM to Snowflake AZ
Well, I woke up this morning nice and happy, and playful. Went out and had a great poop on the rocks then went back in the little dog door they have (very convenient because I like to come in and go out a lot of different times) and tried to play with my humans. But for some reason they were too busy. Then I realized…they were moving all around and packing again. I guess they just gave up on the Jeep because they were surely getting ready to leave for a long one again. And we did. They did surprise me on the way out of Rio Rancho with a stop at the dog park first, but then it was on the road again. I was pretty tired from playing so I slept a bit. I will really miss Rio Rancho. I could totally live there. Nice cool evening, no humidity, fun walks in the dessert, lizards, a nice quiet house, a nice back yard. It really is all you could ask for. I just don't understand why they wanted to leave. But leave we did.
Back on Rout 66. We kept stopping at trading posts, and some of them let me in so that was cool…mostly, when the other humans kept away from me…but I did have to bark at a few of them. We stopped at something called Owl Rock. I know owls…we have them in my back yard in NC a lot, but I don't have any idea why this huge rock is called that. I guess to humans it looks kind of like an owl. Rt. 66 continued for a while, blending with interstate 40 off an on. Traffic was heavy and we were stop and go for a while. Every time we stop, I think it's time to get out, so I get up and check. A lot of that happening today.
We finally crossed over into AZ, and immediately the landscape changed, red rocks and desert, long, flat, empty desert. I kept getting up to check every few minutes and it was still desert. Some pretty interesting boulders and rocks if you're into that kind of thing. But finally, we wound up in a small town, ironically named, Snowflake. It's a really interesting oasis of green in the middle of this long desert. We thought the name was irony, but Snack Guy looked it up and turns out it's named for its Mormon founders, Erastus Snow and William Flake. Maybe it still is ironic. They founded it back in the 1800s. You've heard of this town too, I bet. That's right…this is the town Travis Walton is from. You remember him, right? I have no idea who this is, but Snack Guy was telling Food Lady that Travis Walton, back in 1975, was captured by aliens here. It was a famous story they made a movie about a while back, called Fire in the Sky. I hope we don't see any UFOs. And I hope we don't get abducted. From what Snack Guy was saying it didn't sound fun.
We took a quick walk around town, and EVERY DOG was walking around off leash…except for me, and that was not fair. It's a very small town, and everyone was looking at us, but only cared about the other dogs. A few of them came up to me and I did my usual: I lay down and wait for them to get close, then I jump up at their face. All but one ran away from me. I envy their freedom here, but it seems like none of them know anything about playing. It's really kind of sad. Maybe all this heat makes them slow. Trying to sleep now, but the kids upstairs are playing and the surprise bangs on the ceiling keep me running for my crate. Thank goodness I've got it! It's gonna be a long night. I hope we go back to New Mexico tomorrow.
I'll keep you posted,
Risa
