Day 4 - The Grand Finale
Today we woke-up early, at 4.30am to be exact for the grand finale of the tour the "Salar de Uyuni", which is basically the largest and highest salt lake in the world. It was so nice to not have woken up with the "stella like altitude headache", think sleeping at 3600 m last night helped and Rina was feeling on form which is a huge bonus.
As if the vast and contrasting landscapes we had seen previously on this excursion weren't enough, this one was certainly the pinnacle. It is just over 4,000 sq km and is formed from what was originally a lake many moons ago and is now a blinding white crust which just seems to never end…just looks crazy!
This has made for some awesome perspective photos… personal favourite is chef Celia holding our group for the tour in a frying pan. Unfortunately for us we didn't get to experience the sun-rise, as after approaching the middle of the flats there was too much cloud which was pretty disappointing (especially after getting up so early) and the photos without the blue sky aren't't as amazing as they could have been.
However witnessing the salt flats alone has made coming to South America worthwhile. Following the photos we visited a few other hotspots including the salt flat museum/hotel with various salt sculptures. Early afternoon soon came around, which was the end of the tour. We thanked and tipped Santos, our driver, who I must say was brilliant (in fact one of the only nice Bolivian's we had met in our time there!) and headed for the town of Uyuni.
