So its Thursday the 19th November were embarking on our first Road trip to The Coromandel. Travel distance is approximately 166kilometres (104miles) and it was such a good drive. We stopped off in Thames for some lunch then drove on the coastal road '25' up to Coromandel Township. On any other day its a beautiful drive...however on this particular day we drove past a Pod of Orca Whales...yes that's right Killer Whales!! 20 metres away from us where these huge whales...consisting of momma and poppa(which were huge!) and a couple of wee little baby whales! I will admit at first i shouted 'shark! shark!' i just saw the finn and freaked out a little haha! It was such an a amazing sight and so rare too!! we followed them all the way up the road and we ended up being in a group of about 6 cars who where following them too...we have some ok pics but that was pretty cool! Coromadel town is a quirky place-i loved it and the shops were awesome. Its home to loads of the regions artists so we had a good gander round their studios!! The campsite is well good...we dont have to go the toilet in a hole..they have proper ceramic toilets and hot water and everything haha! Were right near the beach and put up the tent no problems! My first time camping is going well so far!!
Our time in Coromandel we ventured to 'Waiau Waterworks' a unique park filled with contraptions that operate using only water and a flying fox..it all brought out our childish side too! A quick drive to Waiau Falls which was great - a kooky little waterfall! If it had been warmer we could have swam in the lagoon..but it wasn't so we didn't!
The afternoon brightened up..we drove to Whangapoua to try and find New Chums Beach..you can only get to it by foot and after a half an hour wander through some farmers field..we realised 'oh this isnt the track' we eventually found it and good golly miss molly it was worth it..its voted one of the Top 20beaches in the world and it was quite good..white sands blue sea..only us on it and we saw a Starfish the size of Ricks Face!! After a few beers and fish and chips on the night we hit the hey!!!
