Hi everyone
We are now in a place called Dunedin which is on the west coast of the South Island, as you can hopefully see from our new funky google map!
We had a smooth trip over considering we had to get 3 flights in 15 hours, but decided to re-route to Christchurch instead of Queenstown as it made more sense in terms of route while we're here.
So..... on our first day in Christchurch we picked up a 'spaceship' called Wally!! (a people carrier that has been gutted and re-fitted with all the 'mod-cons' of a campervan, we even have a dvd player in there!! Wally will now be our trusty (we hope) companion for the whole of New Zealand!
For the rest of our day in Christchurch we wandered around doing art galleries and historic buildings until frankly we got a bit bored and decided that the next day we would head off down the coast.
Before motoring down the Highway #1 (much more scenic than our British Equivalent!!) we spent a day in Akaroa, a sleepy little town that allegedly marks the spot where the frogs came over and first attempted to settle here! Its a very scenic little place and we got some great photos before moving on to spend our first night in Wally's company!
The following day, we headed on down to Oamaru and had a mooch round there, not hanging around long, before moving on to the Moeraki Boulders which were quite impressive and were crying out to be climbed (Pictures to follow). We then visited the town of the same name and again moved on quickly having got our pictures!! However, slightly further down the road sits the lighthouse, from where we were able to hide away and watch Seals and Penguins trotting about on the beach - was really cool to see them in their natural habitat and very amusing to see just how lazy a seal can be - they literally do nothing for hours!
We then cracked out some of Wally's better hidden talents, including the gas cooker and made ourselves our first cooked meal of Sausage Pasta, before settling down to watch the one of our complimentary DVDs.
Today has seen us take on the Otago Peninsula, a complete warren of sand tracks and dusty roads which eventually unfurl some incredible views, before heading down here to Dunedin where we plan to spen this afternoon and tomorrow morning before heading down to Queenstown.
So far we are absolutely loving our nomadic lifestyle and are very excited about arriving in Queenstown - the hub of all things adventure!!
Hope everyone is well
Lots of Love
Rich and Beth
