Well day six on the island and we are definitely slowing down
The highlights of the day are now no longer touristy things but simple things like getting messages from friends and family. Obviously everyone that sent messages are now on the christmas card list, and everyone that didn't ... well don't hold your breath come christmas time
Of course the other highlight of the day was finally breaking out Pedros 40th Birthday present ... his new backgammon set.
We stumbled into a little shop on our first day here and found a little greek man that hand makes the sets during the winter season when all the tourists have gone home. They are all hand carved and have 3 different types of wood inlaid in them for the markers. Apparently Pete has been wanting a backgammon set for ages and now he has one with a great story to it.
Unfortunately for me, his beginners luck was extraordinary and with 2 challenges carried out, the final score was 2 to 0 in his favour!! Clearly either I need to give him more wine, or I need to drink more water whilst playing.
For anyone wondering if there is such a thing as the off season here ... YES .. YES THERE IS!!
After speaking to some of our favourite bar and resturant owners, it turns out they work flat out for 8 months of the year and then have 4 months off.
Now when I say flat out ... we're talking 14 to 18 hours per day, 7 days per week for 8 months. No wonder they get a little grumpy towards the end of tourist season. On the bright side, all the sales are on in the last few weeks ... clearly no point holding onto stock for 4 months!!
BUT .. if you are considering coming in the off season ... DON'T ... on the bright side, You'll have the island to yourself .... on the downside ... You'll have the island to yourself! Even the residents move back to Athens in the off season.
The temperature is dropping by about 1 degree per day here at the moment. Its quite chilly and I'm very glad that I brought my overcoat ... definitely looks like we're going to need them in London ... but still bikini weather in Thailand
If you check out the photos you'll notice our resident greek god has clad himself in white cheesecloth .. the traditional garb for greek men ... or so the shop owner said!!
The only downside to this is we keep loosing him as he keeps blending in with the buildings ... luckily he walks past a blue door occasionally so we can find him again.
Petes also doing a roaring trade at every bar and resturant we go to ... people mistake him for one of the staff ... with the tips he's making we should have this trip paid off in no time!!
Well thats about it for the day ... just a small blog today
