Well day II is definitely done and dusted and what a great day.
I got up early and watched Santorini come to life from our deck ... watched another 3 cruise liners come into port and hundreds of poor donkeys walk down the mountain to pick them up. The jingling of their harnesses and bells is a very distinctive sound and one I'll remember fondly .... especially seeing they were jingling specifically for us later in the day
Pete & Jen finally surfaced a few hours later, having fully recovered from jet lag. Pete got busy in the kitchen cooking up a storm as only he can to produce a gourmet breakfast of freshly brewed coffee, scrambled eggs, freshly torn and toasted bread, with melted local cheese and ham. We definitely won't be starving here! Jen performed a 'Castle' moment with the old "what do you call this honey" to which we all replied ... ham & cheese on toast ... its not rocket science babe
We then decided it was time to walk the 600 steps down to the old harbour in order to work off breakfast and the red wine from the night before. Its tougher than you think ... even walking down was quite an ordeal, especially picking your way through tourists and donkey poo (not sure which one is more offensive to the locals inhabitants of the island)
After browsing through the shops at the bottom we found a nice little taverna and had greek coffee and cold water whilst checking out the expensive toys that were in dock. There was a boat (sorry ... small cruise liner) called the "Outback", which we could only assume was owned by Australians, but didn't see anyone famous that we knew ... couldn't find any reference to it on the internet either, so if you find out who it is, let us know.
We then voted unanomiously to catch the local express back up to the top ie the burro express. So yes .. for the first time ever ... there are actual pictures of Jen & Jacqs asses on the internet!
At about this time, Richies deep seeded distaste for climbing aboard large animals that are out of his control whilst climbing a cliff face came to the foreground. He steadfastly REFUSED to hop on a donkey and was determined to prove he didn't need one. The first 16 kms upwards proved to be a breeze for him as he strode strongly next to our donkeys. The final 120 kms however proved to be his undoing and I must confess I was more than a little concerned about his general well being by the time we got to the top.
I now know that in a contest of stuborness between Richie and a Donkey ... richie wins hands down.
Damon .. richie is convinced that this grueling marathon was definitely equivalent to a squat session ... so the exercise regime is definitely on track My donkey thought so to, so I'm also on track xxx
After recuperating with a little retail therapy we returned to our cave and washed of donkey remains before heading out, splitting up and discovering more of our little township of Fira.
Our excursion proved that we definitely have the BEST villa in all of Santorini .. there was no sinking feeling of 'damn ... wish we were staying here' which was great.
We met back at the gelati store and all said ... "we've found the best bar" which luckily turned out to be the same one .. the Vertigo Bar. We wiled away the next few hours there taking pictures, having drinks, and listening to Americans drawl away ... was definitely an excellent bar though and we will be heading back there again over the next few nights.
Looking down at the harbour at 9 different cruise ships brought back fond memories of Richies 40th birthday ... all we were missing was Rod & Suz. Oh well, with 2 days left for you to win lotto in September, you may still have time to join us ... you'll definitely love the Vertigo Bar xxx
Check out our pictures ... Santorini Day II ...
Have to go now ... about to drink coffee on our deck and watch Santorini come to life again today
Jacq & Richie, Jen & Pete (apparently they are too poor to afford their own free website so are mooching in on ours ) xxx
